jack russel crosses with cats?

If I were you I would avoid pure Chi's like the plague! If you do go for the more old fashioned type with what they call a 'deer head'. You probably already know this but the apple dome heads are actually quite dangerous in that like babies, the frontanel (sp?) rarely closes so a little knock to the head could have dire consequences

Oh I didn't know that, thats a little worrying. I know some chi's are so deformed now days though, sometimes appears the heads can't even contain their eyeballs :(

Mouse is soo pretty, she has the type of look I like.
I think I will have a look around rescues too, I need something small as we don't have a particuarlly huge garden or house but enough energy so I can go out jogging with it etc.

Thankyou for all the replies!

Gwena those pictures are absolutely gorgeous, I LOVE their tummies hahaha.
I want a pure chihuahua really but I just find most of them so overpriced and I don't really want to pay someone so much, when really its just their greed imo.

I do like the look of jackchis, I'm not a huge terrier fan but I do like smooth haired russels.
Hence my question! but no I think I'm just overworrying, I've had rabbits and hamster with cats in the past, which I'm sure were in more danger with my cats than my cats would be with a dog lol.

Thankyou for posting this as well, I do love whippets but I must admit I have been put off them by the fear of what I've read with cats, I'm def going to be more open minded now on what I'm looking for.

I have 2 whippets and an Italian Greyhound and 2 cats, 3 geese and the only things that get chased are the dogs by the geese generally!! The dogs and cats get on like a house on fire!!

Hands up to being another one that thought this thread was going to be about some weird hybrid cat x dog thing :D

I was even thinking what silly designer name it could have, and Im thinking it would be a Jack Pussle. Or a Chi-miaowa :D

We had a JRT years ago was completely horrendous with cats but she came to us as an adult dog from an owner with a strong dislike of cats so she was encouraged to chase, and she never really lost that inclination.

Well bred chis rarely have problems. Mine last one lived to just short of eighteen years. The one before only made 17 but poorly bred ones & crosses do have problems as evidenced by the JRT x chi above. Deer headed chihuahuas don't exist in the UK.

We've just introduced a terrier ( the speeshul bedlington) to our new 9 week old kitten, the cat is very assertive and has put him firmly in his place, i suspect that problems arise when the kitten/cat runs and awakens the chase instinct

I have a 2 year old jrt x border terrier and two ten year old cats. we specifically chose a pup who had been born and bred around cats - his breeder has loads of cats. Stan loves the cats but does think it's fun to chase them...they've learnt to stand still and give him a swipe now! He only chases them in play though, not in a 'prey drive' sort of way. He has been known to take his toys to them to try to get them to play.

We made the mistake of keeping them separate at first tho - we should have just let them work it out themselves. In the end we were doing diy in the bathroom with the door shut for a few hours and opened the door to find cat and dog sat next to each other and we haven't separated them since. Incidentally they are very neurotic cats but have been much more emotionally stable since the dog arrived 2 years ago?!

just an update!

Met my mums friends long haired chihuahua the otherday, I'am totally and helplessly in love.
I honestly don't think I will ever be able to be chi free now, they're absoutely gorgeous.

I ahave the blessing of my parents and I'm now looking for a long haired chi puppy!!
I'm so very excited, this will be my first dog and I have been wishing for this for a very long time! ♥ ♥

We have a parsons terrier and it gets on fine with our cat - if he sees a cat whilst on a walk that's a different story he chases them. We even had a young cat (which sadly got knocked down by car and killed) which slept with our dog, they got on great.

I've always found JRTs very catlike, so I suspect this was done a long time ago (even if it's not what the OP meant) :D

We have 3 cats, one play proper rough and tumble with the JRT, one cuddles up to him on the sofa, and the other one runs away (which the JRT also interprets as playing, even if the cat doesn't).

I have always wanted a Chi so I'm now very envious OP :p
