I have an american friend from another horse forum who is trying to find dogs that would meet the breed standards for a new registry in the states - details HERE .

Her message reads:

They are built like short legged jack russells but they are solid colors or have only a little bit of white markings.

It seems from the ads I have seen over there that some people just cross the white jacks and the solids and don’t care about the colors. I want to get in touch with people that breed this type of “jack” so I can talk to them about importing some to our east coast. If you know of anyone or know someone that might know someone that would be great. I’ve found out its expensive to ship a dog on its own to the States but not so expensive is someone is flying over and brings the dog with them. My daughter is in college and knows some students at her school that are from England so I may be able to arrange for someone to bring dogs back with them at the end of the summer. This gives me time to work out details.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Anyone any thoughts?

Thanks!

Can't help except to say that it sounds like a bit of an odd request - as far as I am aware JRTS are required to have a mostly white coat and I've never heard of the 'original' colour being black and tan. There are many small solid coloured terriers already that would fulfill the criteria without trying to invent a new breed registry, surely?

JRTs aren't actually required to have certain amounts of particular colours as the traditional short legged JRs aren't a recognised breed as such. There isn't a breed standard because the breed varies so much. My 3 are related, mum/daughter/mum/son and half brother/sister and they're all different. Millie is solid coloured, Mouse is white and tan and Jimmy is sable and white.

The solid coloured JRs are becoming more common, I've bred 2 black and tans and 2 wheatens/fawns.

Good luck for your friend, but agree with Blackcob

i've got a black and tan russell bitch with a tiny bit of white on her chest and white paws, she was 1 of 3 in the litter, so they are about. i haven't seen very many though. agree that there is no breed standard and that's part of the charm tbh! you never know quite what you're going to get...
i bred a rough-coated tan and white to a smooth-coated tan and white, and got 5 puppies, one who looked just like mum, 2 like dad, plus a rough-coated white, black and tan, and a smooth-but-slightly-long-coated blenheim (ginger) and white!

My JRT was bred out of a brown and white bitch by a black and tan dog, five pups, one brown and white, two "dun" coloured, and two golden. Seems that any colour combination is possible.

I think there is such a variation with JRTs because the short legged working type are not a registered breed, like echodomino says. I have heard of JRTs being considered a type rather than a breed. So there does tend to be such a wide variety! We have had tan and white ones, black and white ones, tricolours (black, tan and white). I think because their breeding isn't known alot of the time colour can be unpredictable. But that is just my opinion because i know nothing about inheritance of coat colour in dogs.

The Parson's russell terrier is recognised by the Kennel Club in the UK and so have a breed standard, and a certain percentage of their coat has to be white.

This is the breed standard http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/82

Is she aiming to introduce the white coat markings or to produce a 'black and tan' terrier?

marnie, looked at the american site and my black and tan jack looks identical to the one on there! i bred him myself from our other dog, another black and tan, although she has a white vest and socks. i got her from my friend who had gone to ireland to buy some horses. she came back with two jacks and we begged her for the black and tan! doing some research, it appears the irish breed them for the colour. anyway, i looked everywhere for a similar stud dog and in the end managed to track one down who is lovely! the owner has 2 black and tan females who she uses to breed from. based in suffolk if thats any help!
