jail time for driver who rammed van into horse

I'm lucky in the fact i've never encountered anyone rude whilst on the roads, had a few people not slow down but most people are polite and considerate towards our horses! Well done for remembering the reg plate tho, I would have been so angry that i would have forgotten it!

Good news. Something similar happened to me once, although not as bad as this. It is very scary and it scares me how many drivers on the roads don't respect horses. Men like him should be banned from driving ever again. Using his van as a weapon, what if he does it to someone else, and kills them next time??

I would like to say a few words to the driver .... **** ****** ***** ****

Unfortunately this site does not allow vulgar swear words

Thumbs up to the judge who treated it more than JUST a traffic incident

It astounds me in general that a lot of drivers are aggressive, arrogant, have no patience, and are just idiots in general. They forget they are behind the wheel of a one ton potential killing machine and forget how much serious life changing damage they can cause with their vehicles. I have yet to come across anything more serious than someone failing to slow down (bus full of children on a country lane - I was more horrified that he felt it acceptable to drive at that speed with children on board to be honest) and I hope I never do. Glad they jailed the idiot though.

And why do people constantly bring up this road tax thing when anyone mentions horses on the roads -ffs dont they understand its Vehicle Excise Duty and horses are not vehicles

Ive had an hit and run with a white van man last year. I have also witnessed a very similar incident to this horse rider & was a police witness.

Its shocking and distressing to both horse & rider. Its taken me 8 months to have confidence to ride on the roads again - only to have an incident last week with a JCB! lol.

He should have got a ban as well in my view, hopefully his insurance will now go up as well, what a total ******, really curious to know what car he was driving, why in my minds eye do I see a BMW.......

Lovely looking horse, intelligent and kind eye :)

Good on the Judge, this her, looks like you wouldn't mess with her!

Brilliant result. What an idiot. He could have killed her or the horse. Good on her for remaining calm enough to take down his reg.

I agree although her hands were somewhat tied as he admitted dangerous driving rather than the CPS prosecuting for anything that would come under The Offences Against a Person Act where the vehicle is intentionally used to cause harm...:(

The article states that he did get a 12mth ban in addition to 10mths custodial (will prob serve 5) and must take an extended retest... It was a 'white van'...

I wish some of the people that abuse animals not just horses would get prison terms, but I was glad to see this arrogant idiot got a term. Glad they were both ok after this, must have been absolutely terrifying.

Maybe this helped make up the Judges mind, he had already previously been jailed for another unrelated offence

The maximum custodial sentence is only two years... Minimum ban is 12 months...

She seems to have done the best she can considering there were probably no real aggravation factors she could take into account (there is no 'intent' considered really in the road traffic act as any resulting injury is normally an 'unintended result' for want of a better way of putting it) and he pled guilty which would see a big reduction... A previous appeal determined that a ban excessively longer than a custodial sentence might cause the poor offender to offend again - so best keep bans fairly short*... There's no mention of any fine that I saw in the report...

It wasn't a 'harsh' sentence...although her choice of wording was good...

Moral of the story... If you're going to intentionally cause harm with minimal consequences - do it in a car and get prosecuted under the road traffic act...

*CPS Sentencing Guidelines - Dangerous Driving
However, a period of disqualification which would extend for a substantial period of time after an offender's release from prison might invite the offender to commit further offences in relation to motor vehicles;

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard... I was about to say "for ages", but unfortunately things like this are becoming woefully common.

No wonder 40% of Brits would move abroad if they could. I'm seriously considering it.

Brilliant, maybe other idiots will now take note and accept they are not the only people entitled to be on the road. Having encountered quite a few of these prats recently I have now invested in a helmet cam which records the whole hack. I feel safer because I know I have a record of what is happening, you can't argue with evidence like that.

I had an eejit today, come flying past me on a single track, and he definitely saw me as it was a straight road , thankfully my horse is fairly good on the road so only had a bit dance about, when he rocketed past me, i was able to keep her under wraps, his window was open and im sure he heard my freakin pr ick , or words to that effect roar i let out at him, he didnt even attempt to slow down and in fact from the sound of his engine revved up to go screaming past us.....absolute arse.
