My RSPCA GSDxCollie, Xara is at least 11 years old and very healthy.

A week ago she bit my other dog (playing as they do) and she cried out in pain.

I couldn't see any injury and thought she may have banged herself so I kept an eye on her.

She remained sore and cried out a few times when eating and then became a bit depressed so I took her to the vet yesterday.

Vet said teeth a bit worn at the front but all in decent health. Ditto for the gums. No abcess or injury.

Vet then tried to open her mouth wider to have a look and Xara screamed again.

Hmm, Jaw problem.

Vet gave her a painkiller and she has a course of one a day to take to see if it's muscular. And also soft food for a week (which she loves).

I tried to open her mouth today and she screamed again.

What could it be?

It might be more ligament than muscle particularly when you open the jaw wider? I would take her back for a more in-depth exam, especially as she doesn't seem to be improving.
