I was wondering if anyone knows what the towing capabilities are of the Jeep Cherokee the smaller Jeep not the Grand Cherokee?
Do any of you guys use one?
Thanks Mel x

I have 2...They are fantastic workhorses...We have had ours for years and years. Mine quite happily tows my HUGE fautras trailer with a 17.2 and a 16.2 warmblood, mares and foals etc... We wouldn't have any other towin vehicle!! One is for sale if you know anyone that wants one ( Quite old and cheap one ) but still got miles and miles left in it!

yes I do - short wheel base as opposed to long wheel base - can tow the same weight as the LWB - its a while since I looked up all the weights so you need to check it on the jeep website - but think my jeep can tow a max of 3.3 tons. There is a percentage you need to leave for safety etc. I tow an bateson Deaville (@950 kg) and a m/w 16.2 so top weight say 600kg plus me, petrol, tack etc. I choose not to put anything bigger than 15.2 mw in with my boy because I do have to tow back up a mega mega steep hill - no science, just my comfort level. Have towed mine and similiar horse on normal terrain with no problems at all - in fact gave a better tow on the motorway.

good point - when I did my research I went into the 4 x 4 forums and asked my garage etc. Common thread was that the Jeep and Discovery were "proper" towing and 4 x 4 vehicles and pretty resilient. Jeeps dont have any fantastic new technology under the bonnet - means less to go wrong. Only caveat is find a nice garage to service your car and not a Jeep one - charges a fortune! and when sticking a tow bar on go to a specialised tow bar fitter for a permanent one. When I wanted one, Jeep wanted to charge me over £500 and it was one that could be unscrewed? I had absolutely no faith that that would be safe to tow my horse with!

Ditto the servicing - the main dealer is a rip off

Other thatn that it is amazing, got me through all the snow and ice, has nice heated seats to dry off, and is a lovely shiny blue :D:D

Thanks so much for all your helpful replies I am currently wanting to get a trailer and after reading about all the towing weight laws was utterly confused I knew I wouldn't be able to tow with my unreliable Freelander and I was wanting to get shut of the darn thing anyway ruddy thing is so unreliable and according to the towing laws its a big no no I just want to make sure I'm legal and safe xx

Funny you say that - we bought "Chad Cherokee" to replace a Freelander (freeloader). Mine is a 55 plate so just inside the cheaper road tax bracket and it only cost me £7500 when i bought it (was 5 years old and below average mileage :D)

I like the name for your Cherokee I can't tell you what I call the Freelander at the moment but it contains lots of bleep words lol x

Am considering Jeeps myself at the mo, some of the Cherokees can only tow 2.25tonnes (2001) so be careful which age you're looking at, think it's the pre 99 which can tow more

actually, not sure what it depends on but doing a quick search on autotrader and then looking at spec they seem to vary from 2.25 - 3.3 tonne depending on engine/model maybe?

I think the diesels can tow more as the engine has more torque (my OH taught me that word!!)

Confused by the weights now....Chad is a 55 CRD limited (2.8L diesel engine) and he is plated for 3.5tonnes.

I can open the door easier than the disco as a jeep isn't as wide so there is less door....also the window is hinged to the roof so you can just pop that open and then reach over the tailgate (also handing for keeping dogs in but getting them lots of air :D )

Mine is a 3.7 - hence towing 3.3 - and the 52 is the same as the 55 as far as opening it goes - no problem opening the door and do find the window popping open very handy as my dogs travel in the back!
