So, the next chapter in the Jerry saga... His urine was back to normal and no more bugs there, vet was really pleased with the results of the cultures and basically said the cystitis was clearing up, and the antibiotics were working, but he wasn't looking any better

She decided to come and see him again and take some fluid from around his stomach to test, and yet another blood sample.

She has a good look at him and we thought maybe the pain in his side wasn't actually there anymore, it was just him reacting thinking it was going to hurt, as there was no obvious reason for it to hurt anymore. So she suggested taking him for a little hack to see how he felt from on top. So I took him out today and he was OK in walk but I tried a few strides of trot to see what he felt like and he was all over the place

so we came home again.

She just rang and said the blood couldn't be more normal, but the tests on the fluid hadn't come back yet. I am at a loss as to what is wrong with him, he definatly isn't right, but now he is drinking a bit and peeing it is hard to put my finger on what is actually not right, he still kicks out when you touch his side, he is grumpy as hell, and not settling at night, his bed is always in a terrible mess which isn't like him at all, and the trot felt really odd. Any ideas?

Think my vet is as confused as me, but now that he isn't dehydrated and the infection has cleared up, she is finding it hard referring him as she cant put he finger on what is wrong with him. She has been in regular contact with her colleague in newmarket but they haven't been able to shed any light either.
 
yep, vet has scanned his kidneys and bladder, but although the bladder looked very small and sore a week ago, it is now almsot normal, so there definatly was an infection there which the antibiotics have cleared up, but vet now thinks there is an underlying problem that we have missed.

OR he is now very wary of people touching his side (as it used to hurt) and his trot has gone to pot!!! hard to know which really. He may also be grumpy and stressed as he isnt doing anything, and hates being out of work, so hard to know what is best to do
 
Where on his side? am wondering cos we had a horse that was very touchy on one side and would kick and bite you, she was x-rayed and she had 3 broken ribs, ( from a kick but no marks on skin) the pain lasted about 8 weeks with her
 
He is obviously going in the right direction, if urine & bloods are normal and he is now rehydrated - so that's really good news. Hopefully the pain will now subside. Horses are terrible for remembering pain (my big mare had a joint injected 3weeks ago and she still won't let me anywhere near the injection site). Is he still being turned out in the day? My gelding had cystitis and took quite a while to get over it, although was nowhere near as bad as Jerry obviously has been.
 
So sorry for you and the poor boy.

Just a thought, have you tried lungeing him rather than riding him, just for a very short period? If you try a few trot strides and see how he looks and reacts, it may just be that he was all over the shop because you were on him and he still "thinks" he is tender. This way, he may cheer up a bit because he is working and you may get a better idea if it's in his head.
 
Not a bad idea, if it dries up a bit will try lunging him, although he is a bit of a hooligan on the lunge so may be hard to see much

He looks ok trotting in the field, and cantering too, so dont think he is in pain when he moves, more when I am on top, but even then he felt ok in walk
