Felt Jerry all over this morning as usual, and he looked quite bright, until I ran my hand over his side, when he turned and went for me, ears back, teeth bared. Now I don't think I have actually ever seen Jerry put his ears back at me before, and he has definitely never tried to bite me, Tried again, same reaction, this time with a nasty kick thrown in. Same result the other side.

Now with another horse this would just tell me they were uncomfortable, but Jerry just doesn't do this, even when not happy, so must be something fairly painful to make him react so strongly. He has never lifted a hoof to anyone, in the whole time Ive known him

ETA: Have rung the vets, and waiting for my vet to ring me back now, but any info in the mean time greatly appreciated

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you honey... please keep us up to date!

I have never come across something like this, but it does sound unlike him. Perhaps he is just generally feeling groggy rather than it being specifically in that area??? You know how we feel when we are just a but under the weather, we don't want fuss or mithering.

We have a horse here who had terrible problems with kidney stones a few years ago. One of his first symptoms was blood in the urine and irritability. He eventually had a kidney removed. Definitely worth considering

Thats what the vet though she might find, but when she scanned and scoped she couldnt see anything but she wants to have another look at his kidneys when she gets the results back.
He definatly isnt acting as normal, and vet is coming back out tomorrow

definitely sounds like a kidney infection, I would try feeding him dandelion - it's a great kidney de-tox. Feed fresh, root and leaf, may just help to soothe things whilst waiting for the vet to come up with something.

good luck, hope he is feeling better soon.

is he on box rest, or is he allowed out? i think i'd put him out in a small field and see what he does... whether he wants to roll, buck, just ambles about, or whatever. sounds like tummy/internal pain of some sort to me.

Kidneys are quite difficult to see on ultrasound. Bruno was referred to RVC and had extensive tests, they operated without really knowing what they were going to find and discovered it was worse than they feared so they had to take the kidney out- thats very rare in horses though

Oh flower - how disappointing.

Have to say I would now be on the verge of hysteria - and consider my horse very much needing an emergency visit now.

Keep us updated.

The Vet has just been, she has taken yet more blood, and changed him on to inject-able penicillin instead of oral stuff. She said his bladder was still tiny. The results from the lab show nothing abnormal in his urine sample, no tumour cells, so thats good news, but still no closer to knowing what it is. She did mention her concerns about a kidney infection, hence taking more bloods, so will have to wait and see.
