Firstly thankyou so much for all the vibes and pms really means alot.

Spoke to my vet earlier, and we decided to give him another 12 hours to dramatically improve before we really started to panic about a joint infection. He is a bit better since then, temperature is down a little but still not normal. He isnt comfortable and have some more painkillers to give him tonight, vet is going to come out first thing tomorrow and decide where to go next.

I am exhausted and cant face another night of worrying about him, I really thought I would wake up this morning to find him looking better, as vet said if it was cellulitus it should improve very quickly. Unfortuently this was not the case, but can hope that by tomorrow morning he has improved enough for me to stop worrying.

Thankyou again for all the vibes, keep them coming, I know they can work wonders

So what are the possible causes/outcomes? or do really not know anything yet?

Found a tiny puncture wound when we clipped his leg, vet says it is either just a very extreem case of cellulitus or the joint has got infected. She didnt want to take a sample from the joint due to the amount of infection surrounding it, she said she would just end up introducing an infection if there wasnt one there already. If it is just cellulitus then he should be almost 100% better in a day or so, otherwise we are looking at a joint infection...

No idea what caused the wound, his field is as dull as they get, just grass, nothing with any sharp edges etc.. it is where his overreach boots sit so not even like he would have picked something up whilst being ridden. Just one of those things I suppose
 
Its good to hear his temperature has dropped a little bit. Has he moved around at all in his box today? i know you said he hadnt really budged at all last night.

Still sending vibes to both of you. Do try and take care of yourself though as well. Your nerves must be completly shot :*(

Not the improvement that you had wanted, but at least he is making some- Stay with it honey, he will be happy and healthy again soon.

Will keep sending the positive vibes, at least he is showing some improvement even if it is not as much as you had hoped. Fingers firmly crossed for you both.
 
Just seen this post, and keep in mind how ill William was with an infection near his joint (thank heaven not actually in it).
The vets were marvellous and fought so hard for him, and it's comforting to know there are anti biotics stronger than normal that may work.
If it is an infection it can be flushed out in an op, which is what William had done, they then left drains in so they could keep flushing it through.
Fingers crossed it's just cellulitis and will respond to the treatment.
I find infections are the things that scare me the most, cuts etc I can deal with but unseen things are scary.
 
I used to have a mare that at the slightest scratch would get really bad celluitus. Her leg would look like a tree trunk - it would normaly take about 3 days for the antibiotics to kick in so I wouldn't start panicing yet. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Your experience with william is what is keeping me going, if he can get through what he did then there is hope for J

Don't panic too much .Penfold had an enormous leg on Easter Saturday.He wouldn't weight bare or eat.He had the strong antibiotics and bute and bandaged from coronet to second thigh.He was walked out as much as possible.A week later it was alittle better and then had a steroid injection and more antibiotics but off but.His hock was the joint affected and the front is still a bit puffy but he is back in full work.
Hope Jerry mends soon,like Penfold.I gave a couple of bran mashes with empsom salts as well, he is only just starting back on hard food.
