Jester is hurt....really scared :(

Could be shoulder area - at our yard a quarter horse got double barrelled in the shoulder - went completely lame, hobbled around, couldn't put his his leg forward. 100% sound again the next day - we think he was just given a 'dead leg' - he was a bit of a drama queen though!
 
This happened to one of my horse's in March, he came in lame one day almost had to carry him over the yard. Vet out did through check and also pared back his hoof, including cutting some of the frog back. Nothing......... gave me Bute and told me to keep him in for 10 days, if no improvement would carry out nerve blocks etc. Well after 10days seemed fine and back out he went, 2 days later limping lame again. Kept in for another two weeks (meanwhile farrier had visited and decided not to trim as too painful) sound again so another farrier came out trimmed him and found gravel in the foot. had to clean out with hydorgen peroxide and stuff very small hole with cotton wool. Now all fine and completely sound but this whole process played out over a five week time scale, and if you had seen him originally would have thought he had broken a leg.
Good Luck to your boy it does sound like an abscess.
 
Thanks for update, been thinking about how you were. Hope things are better tomorrow.

Our youngster was on three legs suddenly last summer, but was back to leading around after three days and we never really found a reason.

My mare went non weight baring lame after a hacking incident (thinking someone could handle her but they couldn't, went for a canter and just couldn't stop, cue going into bushes, dead stop/twist, rider in bushes) next day she couldn't walk, vet, check up and nerve block later, vet tells me fracture, needs X-rays etc. All booked in, the next day sound as anything, never found any issue.


Will be sending lots of vibes to Jester.
 
When F did his shoulder strain he was happy to stand on it - just not swing it forwards, I'm voting abscess ;)
 
Another vote for an abscess - mines been on three legs for nearly a fortnight but she's coming sound now.

She was literally hopping the first day. We had to chase her out of the field with whips and brooms - so scary, but fixable

I went and did my last check up on Jes just before dark (he lives out). He was still hobbling but still no swelling or heat. Picked his feet out again and had a good feel/look but nothing to indicate an abscess as of yet..?? He ate his dinner earlier and is cheerful enough in himself...with no idea at all that he had me with fearing the very worst...pig :o
Will see what tomorrow brings now I guess :(
 
I, too, think it could be an abcess. When my lad, Murphy had one, my friend rang me in tears, saying Murphy couldn't walk, come quickly.We got him in, albeit very slowly, and he immediately laid down in his stable. Worried sick he had a broken leg, the vet came and after examination, declared "at least we haven't got anything broken". Turned out to be an abcess, so I really hope this is all yours will turn out to be. Very worrying for you though, as it's so scary watching them unable to walk properly.x
 
Might be worth giving your farrier a ring, too. They're often much better than vets at finding abscesses (and vets will be the first to admit that)
 
Easier said than done try not to worry I am thinking the same as the others that have said could be an abscess. Had two different horses like this and thought the worst and it turned out they did have a abscess. Thinking of you both x
 
Update...Jester is still exactly the same so now vet has prescribed bute. Waiting for the farrier to call me back. Still no heat or swelling, still nothing so far to indicate an abscess.
Am starting to think he has maybe strained something but I suppose I will know more when farrier has seen him.
He was supposed to be going off next week for schooling to start his ridden career but that will have to go on hold now :(
Hate seeing him in pain, poor boy :( :( :(

Sorry to hear he is no better - what a worry for you :(. Here's hoping the farrier finds something completely innocuous and Jester is better soon.

Apologies if you've already said, but have you tried popping a poultice on? You don't have to be able to see anything particularly to poultice and if you use warm water it may just help draw any nasty stuff out. :)

Hope he's feeling better very soon. :)
 
What a worry. Don't give up on the abscess theory yet. A few years ago wee man had some intermittent lameness. Farrier couldn't find owt, vet couldn't either. It went on a month or so until he looked more sore one day. Full lameness workup, nerve blocks, ultrasounds, nothing obvious. At a £1300 bill we were considering scintigraphy and decided to try poulticing again in the meantime, when all of a sudden, a week after workup, boom - revolting abscess burst! Fingers crossed for Jester.
 
On the plus side, if he had tweaked or pulled something and he was that lame, there would be something to see (heat or swelling). If he'd been kicked higher up there would be something to see (a wound or heat or swelling). There often isn't anything to see with an abscess until the infection starts tracking upwards. Remember, most lameness is in the foot and most sudden, acute, dog lame foot lamenesses are abscesses.

Did the vet manage to isolate where he was sore?

Soaking and poulticing brought Spuds to a head. The good thing about abscesses is that when they do pop, the horse is pretty much miraculously sound again - Spud is currently flinging himself round the field, sound as a pound, like a right fraud, but if you'd seen him the other day he was trying to say he was dying. I really hope this is the case for your boy xxx

If its an abscess - which is still a distinct possibility - a day or two of bute will be great as there is nothing like moving around to get the abscess shifting. Pus-vibes coming your way :)
 
I still have a feeling from your description that hes likely to pop an abscess somewhere, he might not react to hoof testers and pop one out his heel or coronet band somewhere
 
I am inclined to agree,. OP ,I do feel for you . When it comes to other peoples horses I can be ever so sensible and logical and calm,but if Bob the nota cob so much as sneezes ,I am in a panic.

I did have to laugh at this....I'm exactly the same :o

As far as Jester goes there really is still no change. He lives out and we have alot of wet ground/mud at the moment so I'm keeping a close eye on his foot in case of pus etc.
Still waiting for farrier to call me back. Vet still thinks it's a strain. Arrrggghhhhh...poor Jester bless him...he is being an angel.
