Cassy is home after her annular ligament cut and is really well in herself, in fact feeling a little opinionated! Her leg is very clean with two incision wounds with a couple of stitches in each. Her leg is bandaged, but she is stamping her foot constantly which is giving me cause for concern. Even at the vets she was stamping without the bandage on. It must feel very weird to her atm.

Have you experienced this and when will it stop?

it probably just feels a bit weird to her. hopefully should stop soon. if not, might be worth getting the bandage redone in case it's too tight or a bit of bedding has got down there and is irritating her. glad she's home

I echo star. I would see how she gets on, and if stamping tomorrow might be worth a bandage change as it could be, like us, she is a bit allergic to the bandage (I know because I am

Glad your horse is home and doing well after the op. Please keep us updated here, as I may be facing this op with my mare down the line and am very interested in how your horse gets on.
 
The stamping could be because stitches can itch, or she doesnt like the dressing or both. She how she is without the stitches/dressing.

My horse used to chew dressings and bandages off following a barbed wire injury.

I hope she continues to make a good recovery.
 
Vets have just been and changed her dressing. The initial dressing was tight and has caused some swelling

We lead her out of her box for the first time to have dressing changed and she was fine, the operation site is clean and no infection, just rather swollen due to the bandage. I can take her onto the grass verge 4 times a day now and from Wednesday she can be grazed in hand as many times as I am prepared to do it! Re-scan booked in two weeks time and a decision on the stem cell implants will be made then. She will also have her other leg scanned to see if that needs the same proceedure.

Cathy Carthorse - She is stamping less now and it could well have been the 4 stitches irritating her, or the tight bandage.

hb6 - That must have been a pain for you, having your horse chew its bandages off. Hope there was no lasting effect.

Thanks alot, glad your horse is doing well. I may well be back asking for information in the future. At the moment my mare is doing well without the operation, but isn't back in work yet, so its a bit of wait and see how she goes before a decision is made.

I am so thankful for this forum though, as it has given me good experiences of the operation. Unfortunately my YO is very anti, as they had a horse PTS after it on her full livery yard (think there were complications/miscommunications though in the procedure), but it has coloured everyone's judgement over the operation, to the point where someone else had another horse PTS rather than even try to fix it!

Trouble is in their small world, they just see it as not working, and think I am nuts for considering it!
 
If you're insured I'd def go for it - H wasn't insured and I still opted to go for it with her - but I think when you're paying out a lot of money you really have to add up the sums and decide whether the risk is worth taking - For me there was no question - H has given me so much I needed to repay her!

Well I'm insured up till November, but after that I'll have to pay, but to be honest I'm in agreement with you Kate, my mare will have the op whether insurance pays or I do, if that is what she needs, in retirement or out, to keep her comfortable.
 
my horse was insured for 75% but i'd still have done it anyway. he did recover very well despite his age (20 at the time). he was sound immediately and stayed sound until he reinjured it in the field, but dont regret doing it as he's now sound again after another 15months rest and we're gently hacking out every now and then again.
