does anyone elses horse jig jog when on the way back from a hack? i took my mare out today and she was horrid at it constantly for about a hour. i went out with another horse who is extremely calm and all she wanted to do was jog and mess about iv not had her for long so any advise appreciated, she is not dangerous but very strong and just seemed to want to go everywhere at a very fast speed she is rode in a 3 ring on 2nd hole that she has always been in,
 
she does it all the time even on roads which i hate i dont mind as much if im in woods but not down the main road i scared she will slip and hurt herself her previous owner just let her get on with it but think im a bit more cautious
 
once she is more used to you and built up the trust and relaxes a bit more then she will probably stop. If my mare is wound up about anything, i don't hold onto her tightly and use a low and calm 'aaaannndd waaalllk'. It always works but I have had her a long time.
I am sure she will settle, I would stay really calm and talk to her.
How long have you had her?
 
I've had my girl for 5 months and only recently started hacking out. The first time she jogged back quite a bit, but on each trip out the jogging has reduced.

She does jog from time to time, but it is getting less, so there is hope - if it is a confidence thing, maybe she is getting more confidence in our relationship.
 
Have you tried taking your feet out of your stirrups? That trick used to work with my little pony way back in the day. Current horse doesn't do fizz.
 
only about 4 weeks so hopefully once we have got to know each other better she will relax more just hoping she hasnt done it for that long that we will have problems with it
 
4 weeks is nothing, once you have developed the bond and she feels more secure in her surroundings she will chill out more. Another tip is singing, it makes you breathe and calms you both. i sing 'you are my sunshine'.
 
I started singing to my girl, but my singing is so awful I just couldn't keep it up - she would have thought it was some sort of punishment.
 
Mine does when we walk past a field full of males, i just talk to her and half halt her if she starts getting too excited.
 
Is there any difference inher if you literally give her all of the reins? Some stop it then others are like great shes letting me go!! As she is still quite new to you its maybe getting used to surroundings, routines and hacking routes.
 
One of the geldings I ride does this on the way home, I tend to sit deep in the saddle with my heals firmly down and say 'easy boy' a few times, this normally chills him out
 
Ditto it's a nervous thing - most horses jig jog along when feeling a bit stressed but too polite to bugger off like they would truely like to do. As she gets to know you better and relaxes it should stop on it's own.
 
My old mare used to be very joggy and I was taught to sit very deep and still and try to use your seat to slow her, basically you have to try to imitate walk with your position and movement and hopefully the horse will follow you. Im sure I havent explained that very well but it does work. Also echo talking to her, as you get used to each other she will hopefully listen to your voice commands as well as the physical aid.
 
I'd be tempted to put 2 reins on your bit, (this is really what they were designed for). Use one on the snaffle ring and the other on the 2nd or even 3rd ring. Use the 1st rein as a matter of course and only if you need to bring the other rein into play. You might find that the mare relaxes when the bit is not so strong while you will still have the confidence that you can hold her if you need to.
 
I've had Ballet for nearly 4 years now and she barely ever walks on a hack, they are far to exciting, she jogs the whole time, and I prefer hacking the 4 y/o. My legs and bum kill after about an hour of it.....

Although you've only had her a while, I'm sure she'll settle, Ballet is just a fogey who thinks she's three all over again!

I do try to sit deep and talk to her, giving her more rein seems to have the opposite effect, she thinks it means go, but have given up and I now just let her do her own thing.
 
am so glad its not only me with the problem shes a ex hunt masters horse so likes to be up front at everything she does i like the sound of the 2 reins so will have to try that on our next ride. shes not strong when we first go out i find it is after about half a hour after shes been out we can turn a corner and she starts jogging and gets stronger. would lunging her before we get going help her too.
 
If she doesn't jog from the beginning of the hack I can't see that lungeing would help. In fact some horses do this if they are tiring, (although it seems odd!). Is she fit enough for the work you are asking her to do?
 
My old boy used to do this always as we turned for home. the only way I could stop it was to make him stand, take a step back, then he was allowed to walk on. For the first few times it seeed to take hours but it did get better once he realised that it took longer to get back to his dinner when he jogged.
