Jills pony books, Jinny etc..What did you read?

I was just reading a post that jogged my memory about the pony books I read as a kid. I loved, and read cover to cover many times, the "Jill" books, as did my mum when she was a kid too. I also read all of the Jinny and Shantih books- ending up with me having my own very naughty chestnut arabx when I was aged 9. Saddle club books too (not as good as it was set in USA). And read Horse and Pony EVERY 2 weeks. In fact, most of my knowledge of ponies was then gained from H&P.

So, who else read these???? Any other horsey stories?


A bit of a sad post but I'm bored!
 
I remember books about a horse called Flicker, and there was one about her daughter.....I also had all of the Jill books

Always read H&P and was a member of the YRC(Young Riders Club), I even had a Freddie lookalike pony

Loved the Jinny series and also any other books by P Leitch the author especially Dream of Fair Horses
The Jackie and Misty series by Judith Berrisford
the Pony series from mary gervaise featuring Georgie and her pony Spot
Books by the Pullein-Thompsons
Also read Gillian Baxters esp the Bobby and Shelta stories
K M Peyton stories esp Fly By Night and The Team
Monica Dickens Follyfoot books and Cobblers Dream

There are more I've read but cant remember off hand. I loved the pony books that were around when I was a kid and I still read them!
 
I guess that I'm a fair bit older than you, as my favourites are Monica Edwards, prefer Punchbowl to Romney Marsh stories but all excellent books, Monica Dickens Worlds End stories, lover the Radney Riding Club stories, which included One Day Event, six Ponies etc and were tritten by one of the Pullein-Thompsons. As a child, my most treasured books were the Silver Brumby series by Elyne Mitchell, I much prefered them to Flicka and Thunderhead as I prefered horses to humans (hmm, actually I still do).
 
With regards to horse and pony and the Young Riders Club they had a column in that called Jessica's diary it was like a weekly blog about a girl called Jessica and her pony Sultan. I used to like reading that.
 
All the Jill books.... all the Jinny ones..... anything by the Pullien Thompson sisters.... The flicker ones, green grass of wyoming (not as good) thunder head etc...

Literally used to comb the jumble sales and school book sales for anything with a pic of a horse on the front..... and then read it till the words wore out

Oooh - I remember Jinny and Shantih - and I think I still have somewhere a big book with about 4 of the follyfoot stories in it! haha!

I can't remember what ones it was - but I remember they used to ride over to each other houses for picnics and things - it always sounded like so much fun!
 
The Black Stallion series, had at least 14 of those if i remember rightly, the whole set.

Oh, and i was in H&P once and I always entered the competitions and won a humane girth and a Mary Thompson (King!) video.

I was a YRC member too! H and P was so much better than Pony mag too. I had more of a Shantih pony that was vvv naughty but then I did want a liver chestnut arab x and that what I got.

All the Jill books anything by the Pullein-Thompsons.

I remember my dad reading me Tschiffaly's ride (sp) set in South America - combined his love of South America and mine of horses remember the horses names were Muncho and Groucho - brilliant book.

Also still have the most beautiful copies of Moorland mousie and Older mousie with the most stunning plates of exmoor and ponies etc think they are by Lionel Edwards who wrote for H&H. Wonderful books written from pony's perspective.
 
all of the above! i was allowed a new paperback every week with my pocket money. loved the Jinny ones, and everything else she wrote. also the Black Stallion ones, Silver Brumby (the last one was really sad though), KM Peyton (read The Team again a few weeks ago!). I adored them all.
sad thing is, i still have them all!
 
I had lots of the Black Stallion books, all of the Silver Brumby ones, some Pullein-Thompsons, all of the Jill series, All the FollyFoot series, all the Mary O'hara books and several of the Jinny and Saddle Club books. I still have some of my favourite pony books, including Black Beauty in a box in the loft

I couldn't tell you how many times I've read Show Jumping Secret by Josephine Pullein-Thompson. Claire Wentworth was my heroine, and I used her schooling tips on my horse 30-odd years after the book was written.

In fact, I read it again a few weeks ago.

I had Pony delivered every week, or month, whatever it was. I had a look at the mag recently, and couldn't believe how it's changed!!
 
Had a few of Ruby Ferguson's Jill books, loadsa Pullein-Thompson ones (favourite was Phantom Horse about a palomino), the Flambards books by K M Peyton (Flambards was a set book in English at my school).. a few Gillian Baxter and Mary O'Hara ones.

Bought several old horse books in jumble sales as a kid including Pat Smythe recreating Tschiff.. er I won't attempt his name.. his ride in S America.
 
I liked the Pullein-Thompson books, the Shantih series and the Black Beauty Family series. Also books like Jump For Joy by Pat Smythe etc. If I'm in a charity shop or jumble sale I'll still look out for those sort of books.
 
Ditto all of the above, just finished reading Darkling (a Peyton one) not so long ago too! Love the black stallion ones, although can't bring myself to read Black beauty - its just too sad

The Jilly Cooper one about showjumpers does that to me too - when the horse dies in the ring, can't bear to read that one either - well, only the juicy bits anyway

Also loved Fly by Night too.

Any pony book that wasn't set in the U.S (never managed to get into them apart from the Phantom Horse series)

Also religiously had H&P on subscription for about 6 years

If we're talking grown up books I love the Dick Francis racing novels now. My aunt comes in handy she has all the old ones and I have the new ones so we do a swap every few months.

I loved Jump To The Top aswell (about a girl who has gets a pony from her riding school that is closing down, turns out this pony is an amazing jumper and she goes and wins this big competition even though someone cut her stirrup leather
