Ive got a job interview for a full time riding instructor tomorrow and was wondering what to wear and what to expect!

Although i have work witn in the industry for a few years, i have always been offered the job so never had a interview!

Please help!

Thanks

I'd give them a call and ask if you will be expected to ride and/or teach so that you know whether to dress for riding.

If you will have to do anything practical I would dress as you would for a BHS exam, tweed black or brown boots, tie, hair neatly tied back.

If not then go smart, but practical, so you look like you can do the job but like you are ready for an interview. If you have a trouser suit wear that.

If you have absolutely no smart clothes then don't ask and go dressed for a riding interview anyway, they won't think badly of you and you will look lovely and smart. Better than wearing unsuitable non-riding clothes and looking unprofessional.

I'd got dressed to ride, I went for an interview at a yard years ago - put my jods on and my Da told me it looked pretentious, so I changed into jeans, the woman was not amused as she'd intended to see me ride...

Definately DO NOT wear a jacket! That would look like you have no experience of working on a yard! It may be wanted for a BHS exam but where on earth do staff ever wear jackets on a modern yard, totally impractical.

Ditto the shirt, tie and smart jumper idea. With either smart trousers (not jeans) or plain colour jods (not pink!). If wearing trousers take jods with you. And clean your boots!

Good luck

Your CV and references will show that you have experience of yard work. The jacket will show that you have made and effort and caan present a professional image. I actually hate turning up to a riding school and finding the staff unidentifyable and incredibly scruffy. It doesn't inspire confidence. You have to bear in mind that at a riding school a lot of the patrons won't be from horsey backgrounds and will base their first impressions on non-horsey experiences.

Personally I think that day to day dress for an instructor should be plain neutral jodhs (black/navy/beige/khaki) with a shirt/polo shirt/rugby shirt, with a gillet/jumper/coat over the top if it is cold and a pair of reasonably smart riding or yard boots. They should look workmanlike and practical but smart and presentable.

For an interview for any role you would turn up looking smarter than you would for day to day work. Employers know that what you wear for interview is your best impression not what you will wear day to day, they also know that you do not know what the dress code is normally.

For example I am a lawyer, for an interview I wear what I wear for court, a dark conservative skirt suit with a shirt tights and court shoes and my hair tied back. For work day to day I wear trousers and a jumper or a skirt and jumper. My sister is a chef, for an interview she would wear a suit or smart trousers and top, that isn't what she would wear to cook in though and her employers know that. They do want to know that she can create a good professional image if necessary and takes care over turnout etc.

It is just the same on a yard. If the OP knows the yard and really thinks a jacket is OTT then perhaps a shirt without a tie under a jumper. She should aim to look smarter than the staff do day to day for her interview.

Do not wear jeans it looks like you couldn't be bothered and have no respect.
