Job queries payment and hours etc

I work on a stable yard and get paid by the hour. I took a large cut in pay to work there but ass they pointed out most weeks I'd get a few extra hours in to add onto my set wage.
My pay was based on so many hours per week which would be a minimum. This was fine I save a fortune in fuel as its closer than my previous job.
However I get there 20 mins early and start work. This is my fault and is fine but when I drop my daughter at school it makes sense to go straight there.
The problem is we are late EVERY day without fail. Sometimes 10 minutes which would be ok sometimes half and hour but when you add it all up....
Am I being petty?
I did mention it a while ago and now me being in such a rush to leave has become kind of a standing joke and I think they make us a little later on purpose (there is certainly no effort made to finish on time)
Is this normal and ok or are they taking the pi**?
 
Its a hard world working with horses, I've done it the majority of my life on all level of yards from international competition to trekking centers to studs and it really is love of the job all the way, I too have a child and found that I often had to put my foot down in order to keep to time commitments with him. Your employer should understand your needing to leave on time and that your not just taking the piss, you get there early so they should recognize this. If you think your having the pi*s ripped out of you then you have to nip it in the bud, I'm afraid if you let people take the mick then they will. Good luck. :)
 
Sounds like as you have been staying late every time, it has become the acceptable 'norm' now.

I would have a word with your boss.

Working with horses is not like an office job where you can always just finish at 5pm and go. However, it is a job and they should ensure that you are able to finish your work on time if they know you have commitments after.

You should also get paid for the extra time you are working- don't work for free, especially with horses, its hard enough as it is! I'm talking from expereince!

Do you have a contract?
 
Tell you boss that you need to leave at X o'clock every day to collect your daughter from school. And you can't work past X o'clock.

I can't see that it's an issue.
 
hmmm, it sort of depends on circumstances, really.
Have you got set tasks that you need to finish before you go? Or is it just the case of you being expected to be there and leave when they tell you you can?
In the first scenario, I wouldn't be prepared to pay overtime to somebody who doesn't manage to do their job in the allocated time, especially if other members of staff do manage similar amount of work.
In the second scenario, I would certainly expect to pay you for any time over the hours that you have been allocated... not quite sure about the being early bit, though.
 
I don't expect to be paid the morning bit- that's entirely my doing.mit just makes sense to go to work rather than anywhere else for 20 minutes. That's fine it also gives me bit of a head start for the morning.
I don't actually have to leave to pick her up, she's not finished at school for another 2 hours but some days I do bits for other places and am inevitably late there. They don't mind as its very casual.
It's hard to answer the set tasks question. We do what we do then then when everyone finishes their jobs we all chip in with the sweeping and tidying etc. often I've done all this aswell before they are finished.
Sometimes it's as simple as my boss having a coffee with someone and chatting for an hour but we have to wait til we can feed. In this case if all is done we can sometimes sit around waiting.
I don't wish to look petty by making a fuss about it. I've already spoken to him and all I get is him laughing and making a big deal about being late.
I'm happy to work the extra IF I get paid, in fact I'd rather work more hours a to get more money!
