While having a particularly blonde moment today I realised that I have no idea if there is any difference between jodhpurs and breeches bar the obvious (length). Are there any other differences?

Also, which does everyone wear and why?

It's just the length. I usually wear breeches because I have short legs:D

Wellll...... breeches were designed to finish just below the knee/mid calf - and were meant specifically to be worn with high boots for more formal equestrian wear such as hunting/showjumping, eventing etc.

Jodhpurs were, I believe, originally seen when the British Army went to India and saw the native cavalry wearing a very practical garment for riding which also lent itself to practical wear off the horse as well, and they came originally with a sort of bat-wing thing over the thigh (I had a pair like this when I was a child!!!) and far more room around the seat than they do now, where they are far more tight-fitting.

Traditionally, jods were OK for girls up to the age when they would go onto horses and into adult competitions, when you'd be expected to wear breeches and long boots, proper fashion!

Nowadays most people competing wouldn't be wearing jods under their long-boots, for one thing they'd be very cumbersome, hot and uncomfortable.

A lot of people have jods which they team up with short boots and chaps or leggings: tho' personally this wouldn't be my choice as there is too much bulk around the ankle.

In summer, I like a nice pair of cool breeches with a pair of aerated chaps, and leather boots, to keep cool. And of course nowadays breeches and jods come in all sorts of colours, even bright pink (puke); whereas in my youth any colour other than buff or khaki wouldn't really have been considered proper.

I prefer jodhpurs because I often find the velcro fastening at the bottom of breeches doesn't do up! It's because I am very tall and also have horendously wide calves and ankles - some rude people call these cankles! :( (I'm not at all overweight I just have really bad circulation and horrible ankles)

With most now TBH the only difference is around the ankle(jodhs having a turn up and breeches velcro fastening).
Since I have never found "full length" too hot,and adore long boots I prefer breeches-simply much less bulk around the ankle and they dont seem to slip as much when putting boots on(still not got arond to those new fangled zip up ones :p ).

I don't own a pair of Jods, only breeches. I find they are cut much nicer than jods and they also cater for my somewhat diminished stature.
