hello all

im after a little bit of advice from you helpful bunch.

im after some new riding gear and dont know whether to buy jodphurs or breeches. my jodphurs have almost died! ive been reading a few posts and you all seem to go for breeches but ice never tried them myself but willing to give them a go.

Can you recommend any decent ones to buy? Ive been looking on equestrian clearance and derby house and im totally confused.

Also sorry for the questions im a size 14 is that a 30 or 32 in jodphur sizing? (Why do they make it so difficult!!)

thank you very much for your helpx

Do you have long boots? Breeches are made to fit underneath them

not at the moment i wear jodphur boots and chaps but im also looking to buy some when funds allow but once again im stumped on which are best. i bought some a few years back from robinsons and they were rubbish so im not sure what to get at the moment

I thought the jodphur/breech difference was pleats at top and tabby velcro thing at the bottom - how do they look any more daft than jodphurs without long boots?

Mine are usually odd, with one belonging to son the other to OH.

OP...buy the best you can afford.....cheaper ones end up giving you a saggy looking bum and wear out quicker.

Have a look at Horze.co.uk.....they have some nice ones I was fancying myself, the cheaper ones are about £30 but their stuff is very good quality.

Yep, long socks cover the bottoms. Personally I go for breeches every time, find the little rolled up bit on the bottom of jodh legs really irritating!
I love the caldene range of breeches, depends how far the budget stretches tho. I've just bought a pair of the Dublin Premier breeches which were £32-ish which are comfy.
I tried about 20 different pairs and styles on last week in varying sizes and only found 2 pairs that fitted and looked nice, so you might be best off going to a tack shop which stocks a variety so you can try them on.
A size 14 would normally be a 30. That said I'm anything from a 24 long to 28 short, depending on the manufacturer!

Edit for stupid typo- size 14 = 30 not 40! (or so I've generally found. I'm a 10/12 and take 26/28 breeches usually which my logic (& the dublin website size chart!) make a size 30 the equivalent to a 14!)

Breeches all the way - with the complusery knee length socks!!

I only ever wear Cavallo, pikeur, RTS or Schumacer.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works though and differ to ChicoMio - I am a size 12 and wear 28

Ermmm...because they dont come down to your ankle, they end half-way down your calf...its so you don't get bulk with tight fitting long leather boots.

I got some really nice breechers from Robinsons last year they were Canary/champange 2 tonned and I love them think they were £25 or something and they really hig your bum nice, no saggy bum in sight. and good value for money

thanks for info
unfortunately i live in the sticks and theres no tack shops around for a good hours drive and then its pretty expensive so im stuck with the internet so thats why im so confused theres so many brands and prices i dont know where to look for the best

I prefer jods, I wear jod boots and half chaps so don't really need breeches. I've just bought a new pair of Loveson cotton / lycra jods, zip front, zip pocket and really comfy....and the best bit only £21! I am also a size 14 and a 30 waist fits me well.

See I like jods cos I cant get long boots narrow enough for my legs, so they kind of pad them out a bit and make them less welly-like.....

show off!

OP- breeches for me! less bulky and i don't get annoying things digging into my ankle. x

I wear either, and I wear either long boots or half boots and chaps....I can't tell the difference once they are on but I do have to wear more socks with breeches inside my boots.

Breeches...they fit better under long boots and half-chaps.

I have to admit although there delivery is a bit lacking i find Derby House own brand breeches really comfy and last well.
I've found that i have to get either a 28 or 30 and im a size 12.

Try Brogini long boots. I had the same problem with long boots, and I then tried Brogini's on and they are fab - really fit my skinny little stick legs all the way up and are nice and fitted in the ankle

Back on topic (

) I much prefer breeches as I hate the bulk around my ankles and they are much easier to get off I find - due to the velcro at the bottom.

Breeches for me too, I only wear Pikeur now and love them, they fit great and wash and wash and wash...just checked the size of mine, I'm a 10/12 and mine are 42

then looked closer and thats European sizing, they are 28

I have converted jods in to breeches before with a pair of scissors. Once its inside a long boot, or 1/2 chap, nobody can see anyway.

Yeah, I find that confusing! A 10/12 should translate to a 38/40 in German sizes, but in the case of Pikeurs, it clearly doesn't! I wear a 40 in most German-made trousers, but for these breeches, need to go for a 42.

I, on the other hand, am a size 8, and wear at least 26 in breeches. I have a pair in 24 and I can barely breathe when I wear them. It must be due to the fact despite being little, I have NO waist and most other clothes (like jeans) and not meant to sit on the waist.

Tesco direct online - I just got 3 pairs new jods for £46. Very limited selection lol but they do normal sizing and very comfy but they only have the crappy little pocket inside!
