out on a hack today and caused him to do an almighty spook on the tarmac, ended up hobbling home very stiff and lame... any ideas what he could have damaged, poor boy, seems it is the off fore as he is reluctant to put wieght on it, we had had such a lovely ride too.

If he reluctant to weight bear after an acute incident I would be having the vet out. I would be very suspicous of him having stood on something and would want to put my mind a rest.

I checked his feet and also we were on the clean tarmac. He really did clamber though when the joggers spooked him, I thought maybe a pulled muscle or ?? We have already had brusided soles this year and he was fully sound going really well. He is quite a heavily built guy, looks a brute but obviously very fragile. Makes me annoyed sometimes, seen many straggling hunters cantering on the tarmac just lately trying to catch up, I would have no horse at all if we did that!

Yes he is shod, only just though after years of being barefoot, but bruised soles caused inflammation of the pedal bone Xrayed (pedal ostetis ) and vet recommended shoes, was reluctant but has improved so much. Just went down to field and he is walking and putting weight on so has improved overnight. i have also given him a shot of bute. I know its nothing to do with the brusied sole problem because it now the other leg.

As he is much better this morning and as you said he is a big guy then he prob just jarred his legs imagine a very heavy person suddenly jumping onto concrete/tarmac it would cause major shocks throughout the body and as he was surprised he wont have had the correct joint positions to counteract the shockwaves. Im sure he will be perfectly fine but if in a couple of days he is still off then I would get the vet out then. The bute should have helped the immediate pains though.

Thx dizzydancer, thats what I was hoping/thinking but could not say so eloquently. Sometimes I over analyse. Its just bad luck really as we never trot on the roads or fast( if thats even possible) work on hard ground.

Blimmin joggers :( This has happened to me too, people just looming up behind him without warning. He's always a bit nervous of people running straight at him too, poor lad, don't think he's always been terribly well treated and this makes him nervous.

We used to hack in an area where the military trained, and you quite often got troops running around, but if they were on a route march they'd always announce their presence and were always very courteous.

Hope your horse is OK soon. Yes I'd be worried too.
