Any tips to stop jogging on the way home? my pony never used to do this that much but is slowly getting worse everytime we hack alone. she gets really het up on the way home and its dangerous as i cant stop to let cars pass as she is doing the tango.

have tried turning small circles, half halts, proper halts, walking in the opposite direction for a few paces, trotting then trying to get back to walk, walking on a loose rein or on a contact.

Does she slow done for a little bit with any of those?
Id say where possible carry on weith the circles until se slows and softens, walk on, as soon as she starts jogging do it again...might take a few rides but i think your doing everything right

I will keep trying but no its really not working if anything it makes her a bit worse!! she is just such a stresshead. she will work a small circle (the lanes are small so cant do much more than 10m circle) in a real hurry then power off again.

My horse used to do this. Each time he sarted to jog, I would turn away from home until he walked properly. Then I would turn back home. Sometimes it took 8 goes in the pi$$ing rain before he got the message that I was prepared to wait him out. You just have to be patient and take as long as it takes before he gets the message.

I've had this with my mare since i've had her. Half halts, circles etc only served to wind her up more. I have gone back to basics and started schooling to get her engaged and to build up her back end as we think she is uncomfortable and running away from pain.

Someone was asking about this the other day... there are some good suggestions on this post, plus it saves me typing out my reply again

Jogging

she's not in pain as all her regular checks are up to date, and she only does it on the way home. shes just fit and highly strung - i dont mind the odd bit of jogging but this iss getting progressively worse and i dont want it to become dangerous with regards to traffic etc.

Try much smaller than 10 metre circles, tiny, so its practically turning on the haunches, except allowing her to move her hind legs, keep keep keep turning until she softens and slows, then walk on, again as soon as she starts to jog, or you feel her thinking about it do the circles....as i said
It takes a while but works with most ponies, mine used to do this all the time, and she gets very stressy too, goes into her heavy breathing im a welsh mare mode, but now shes an angel most of the time

Have you tried 30 mins intensive schooling when you get back to the yard? Teaches them that getting back to the yard sooner doesn't mean a nice feed and a cosy rug so there is no point in rushing
