I think it's very easy to blame 'banker' in general for what is in reality a problem of everybody's making. The banks, greedy as they have been, were only providing a service to all the other greedy bu99ers who wanted a slice of the action. Nobody held guns to peoples heads and said you must take out mortgages with us...don't worry about whether or not you can afford it
I don't know how much you know about the bankin industry as a whole. I know a little...and I certainly don't think you can penalise the people working in branches, serving jo public, for something they have / had no control over whatsoever. Also consider this...if the little people don't get their bonuses...then what are they going to spend to bring the economy back to life...eh
I dont know much about the banking industry but i do know they recieved an enormous amount of taxpayers' money to save their asses. Without that they wouldnt have a buisness, let alone a bonus! Some people are greatful to have a job at the moment.
It is of the greater population's making as well, but people who made bad decisions are paying for it - and even some who didnt make bad decisions with their money.
I also know that in my job we have a bonus scheme, if we as a store do not perform, we do not get them. And i dont understand why they should get a reward for nothing.
Don't forget the humble people working on the 'front line' in banks (on generally not that great a salary) are also tax payers. Banking is also about sales and very few sales jobs do not reward with a bonus of some sort.
Bonuses are perfectly acceptable if that individual and/or department has performed. Just because the company itself may not have performed that doesn't mean every individual working there hasn't!!

And that is my point
I may be a little 'biased' as someone else above has said (i DON'T work for a now state-owned bank btw...in fact i don't even work for a UK bank...i do work for a bank that was cautious and still managed to make a profit last year though
)...but i'm not a banker...i just WORK in a bank. My departments workload increased 60% last year as a direct result of the turmoil in the global economy. I already worked 13 hour days...and now am working weekends as well to overcome the problems caused. I don't sell mortgages, i don't know what a credit derivitave is....i just do IT. Why shouldn't i get some recognition for all the extra hours i've put in to help sort out the problems ? I fully agree that those who made poor decisions and caused departments to make a loss should be penalised...and believe you me, in banking you don't tend to stay around too long if you do start costing money...it's a pretty cut throat market !
I'm not expecting any sympathy btw.....but my bonus is in the bank and i'm not apologising to anyone for it
ETA: You should also be aware that the 'taxpayers' money that has been used to 'bail-out' the banks is actually a very shrewd investment on the governments part. They have effectively bought shares at a fraction of their value...and will when the industry has recovered slightly be sitting on huge profits. Ask your local politician when he'll be expecting to share the windfall profits with you...the taxpayer though
I don't think it was that shrewd an "investment". The £18 billion ploughed into the banks just a few weeks ago is currently worth just £4.6 billion. That sounds like a loss not an investment to me!
