join up for napping horse?

my friend has bought a new horse a couple of months ago and she has been riding out with me and on her own quietly she has just started in the last couple of weeks to introduce cantering and jumping though only very quietly both following my horse and on her own, a few times now she has started to get a bit nappy but seemed ok once you rode her fowards, the only problem now is she is starting to stand up not completly but pretty decent size rears, we tried join up this evening and she was releaxed at the end but any other ideas would be great!! the horse is 5 though not done much!
 
(as a pre check, get everything looked at to make sure no pain etc)

Go back to basic work and makes things simple again and re-establish a bit of this if the horse is very green. (i.e short hack out in company for a while and progress when you think your friends horse 'is' ready.)

I think a stick would come in more use! In all honesty just keep riding forwards she'll soon get over it

Totally agree with russoheidi. You must rule out anything like back problems or saddle problems before you pick the whip up and use it. It woud be horrible if you did and then found out there was an issue. If nothing is found, then back to basics and teach her to move forwards.
 
Whilst getting back etc checked I would either not ride it at all, or continue to push/smack it forwards or you will end up with a nappy horse even when 'fixed' through learnt behaviour..
 
thanks everyone her back and teeth were done soon after she got her so thats all been ruled out, will pass everything on to my friend!!
 
Is it a young horse?

TBH I don't think join up will help (plus you really do need to have some join up sessions with an RA, IMHO, if you're going to do it properly). Sounds to me like the mare needs someone to tell her what's what when on board. How experienced is your friend, and is she a nervous rider? I could be wrong but it sounds like the horse is taking the pi££!
 
What triggers the napping? Is she napping to the gate in the school or when leaving the yard for a hack? Or it is just a general not wanting to go forward at all times?

If it is general rearing at all times and not wanting to go forward I would want to have her tack and back rechecked. If is napping towards home or to get out of school then she needs a firm hand. Your friend should get an instructor in for lessons at least once a week for a while. Young horse's are hard work and learn bad habits far quicker than they learn the good ones!
 
My young cob has suddenly started the same trick. He will be fine then 15min into hack will nap and rear. Also started in in schiool too. Back,teeth,saddle etc all done. Has got worse since we moved fields although still with same horses. I have been advised to get a harbridge so ordered one. Also does it lungingin the school now. I think its a -I have realised how strong and stroppy 5 yr old- I can be!!!!
