Since we have moved house my 2 geldings have become extremely close - they are living out this winter and sharing a field shelter so are together all the time. I am hoping to start getting them back into work over the next few weeks but I'm not sure how they are going to feel about being left alone while the other one is being excercised.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to make this easier for them? Short of getting a shetland as a spare companion I am stumped.

My 2 mares were like this for a while and to begin with exercising either of them created chaos but it slowly gets easier, I started by bringing one in for short periods I.e for a groom then build the time up when they adjust to being seperated. If you bring one in can the other still see it? Keeping the one left out occupied with a haynet or field lick might help? Hope you find a solution, the other thing I tried was ride and lead which worked well but doesn't really solve the sepereration thing but does get them exercised?

I have started bringing one in and leaving the other out for but I haven't anywhere that they cant still see each other. I am not worried about the pony as I have had him long enough to know that the worst he will do is shout and pace up and down but my horse is a different matter. He has only ever been on a big racing yard with other horses so I am worried he will jump out and hurt himself. I'll just have to start him gradually I guess he will just have to get used to it. I can ride and lead with them and have done on my previous yard so yes that does exercise them.
