No experience of joint capsule infection Amymay, but we've had a tendon sheath one, which I'm sure you'll remember the story to be a happy ending. :)

And ..... I don't know what Amymay wants to know about, so I'm not going to ramble on incoherently for Amymay to say "yes thanks, I know all that, I was just doing a 'how many of you have had capsule infections' question".
 
He picked up a very innocuous looking cut in the field that was extremely close to the joint, so vet was called as a precaution. They examined and no synovial fluid present, so joint believed to be intact. Wound was flushed with saline and bandaged.

Next day, horse could not weight bear at all and when bandage taken off, joint was as hot as I've ever felt a joint.

Vet out again, flushed joint with saline again, put some intra site gel on, bandaged and put on antibiotic powders and had injection of the same.

That was it, if I remember correctly, he came right very quickly and never suffered with it again or any long term damage.

It ended up being a pretty expensive do for such a small cut :(.

Thanks Quirky. Sounds exactly like my situation - execept no extreme lameness and he's been treated intraveniously from the word go as a precaution.

How long did you have to box rest for??

Lameness is the best indicator with wounds of this type, so if your horse is sound then I wouldn't worry too much. I avoid using analgesics in horses for the first couple of days following a wound close to the joint for this reason, as it is suprising what they can mask.
