Well all was going well with our foal he was two weeks old when he came in from field slightly lame. Ground was very wet and thought maybe he had slipped and pulled something. Next morning he was hopping lame so vet called. Vet suspected joint ill in elbow. As slight swelling and temperature up. Gave ab's and painrelief. The next day he was almost completely sound but vet thinks might just be due to pain relief. Foal is very bright in self and feeding well.

Advised to continue ab's and see how he is later. Anyone been through this? Experiences/outcomes? What treatment they had? And the dreaded question of cost. I don't want to sound mercenary but he isn't insured due to age and whilst I want o give him everychance I don't have bottomless pockets.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Not personally, but a foal born at the yard I was at a couple of years ago was sadly affected by joint ill, and things didn't look very hopeful. He had to have the joint flushed - I think a couple of times, but on the positive side, he did make a full recovery. Hope that encourages you.

I hand reared a lamb with joint ill and poor thing couldn't walk for a few weeks as joints so stiff! I gave her a remedy from cross gates (google) and it was amazing and she was soon moving around! She ended up with very wonky front legs but still gets around fine!

Yes. A week in horsepital with mum and he made an apparent full recovery.

When we moved from his birth home he began to suffer problems/infections one after the other. There were long periods when he was very well. I think looking back his immune system was damaged and he couldn't cope with a new environments. Sadly he was pts age 5 with a diagnosis of PLE of unknown cause.

I have heard of many with a full and lasting recovery though.

Thanks amandap good to hear all stories. I'm trying to stay hopeful but equally realistic that the worst could happen,

widget, my interpretation (guess) is just that. :) I think most who recover are fine. x

Sending healing and strength to your boy. x Strength to you too. It's horrid seeing them so sick so young. xxxxx

ps.Sorry if I came over a bit matter of fact above. I cope with the memories a bit like that. I'm still a bit raw two years on.
