My mare needs joint injections to her hocks for spavin and I'd like your views/experiences of having the injections done at home. The norm is to go to a clinc but I'm having a transport crisis.

The vet says that the risk of infection is higher when doing it at home. Does anyone have a view on this? I'd be disinfecting her stable, providing clean warm water for the vet to wash in and generally doing my best to make it spotless.

Opinions appreciated - is the risk minimal?
Thanks!!

I just wonder whether it is worth the risk or not ... I did not have any transport but my friend offered to take me in his lorry £25 for his time £25 for Fuel ...... unless your 'crisis' is not being able to load the horse .... as in the case of my old boy ... then we had to opt for alternative treatment for a DDFT sprain

i have a pony that had injections for spavin about 2 years ago,it was done at the clinic and she had no problems with infections.the vet did scrub and wash her legs for about 20 mins and that was in a clean environment.i dont know if they would do it at home but i would be worried about how clean the area was but i suppose if everything was clean it might be ok.not sure if id take the risk though.

My old mare had three rounds of injections into her hocks done at home and we had no problems at all. In fact, if my memory is correct it was never even suggested she go to the clinic, we are going back about 8 years now so maybe they have become more "infection" conscious!!

same as, my mare had her knee and a coffin joint done about 6yr ago, both were done at home.. going to the vets was never mentioned..

My horse's hock and fetlock was injected last September (in an empty, clean stable) vet cleaned legs thoroughly before and after and if my memory serves me right also gave him an anti-bio jab as well, no problems at all.

mine mare's coffin joint injections were done at home too - no problems and that was last year with a well thought of equine practice. They just shaved hair, hibiscrubbed well, and kept site covered for 24 hrs and mare in for a few days. I think the injection site should close over almost immediately?

I use to work for a practice who had no option but to do it home. We never had any problems with infection, as long as the area is clipped and clean sufficiently.
Obviously your aware of the risks and prepared to take precautions so good luck

We have just had joint injections for spavin and had them done at home and there was no problem with infection our vet mostly travels to his clients and does everything in your own yard. He clipped, scrubbbed and disinfected thoroughly and then he bandaged the joints for 24 hours. We had a course of 4 that is one every 6 weeks and now he is actually our jumping 1.10 again for the 1st time last week in competition- so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Merlin has had his fetlock injected with Irap therapy three or four times and his hocks injected (both legs) all in the stable, and I wasnt asked for it to be scrubbed clean.

The vet did clean his legs thoroughly and bandaged them afterwards..... but never was he admitted to hozzie for it ....

good luck
