Joint injections

I'm considering joint injections for the horse into his damaged, arthritic knee. This is my last hope after trying everything else, including stem cell injections to improve/regenerate cartilage. The one thing I haven't tried yet is steroid injections (or anything better?) into the joint. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance.
 
Have you tried Cartrophen?

If so there are many different types of joint medication that have different lasting effects and different withdrawal periods (not that that is a concern right now!)

Sometimes they work very well, some a little, other times not at all. It's luck of the draw and no harm in trying.
 
Vets are not doing joint injections at the moment, it does not come under emergency work, plus there is the risk of infection etc afterwards which would necessitate more visits.
Its pants for those of us with horses part way through on going treatments and investigations, but it is what it is.

Yes - Ive tried cartrophen, it made no difference, and I think I've worked my way through every supplement there is. The horse is on field rest atm. I've stopped walking him because of the current CV situation. This enquiry is about treatment for the future...just looking for a glimmer of hope.
 
My mare has just had Aquamid Hydrogel injected into her coffin joint for degenerative changes. This is following two lots of steroid injections.

The first steroid injection gave her relief for 6 months, the second for 3 months.

Tiddlypom.....Ive tried ignoring your rather presumptuous post in response to my own query, but I expect Ive got to much time on my hands at the moment. Thank you for your interest in my enquiry, but please do not presume that I intend to be demanding joint injections for my horse in these highly unusual and difficult times. I did post further down that responses to my enquiry would be implemented in the future, when hopefully, normality has resumed. You're not a school teacher are you?
 
Also not sure if it possible to do facilitated arthrodesis in knee joints but I know someone who did this with an arthritic hock joint
 
I had one of mine injected with arthramid at the beginning of March in the hope it would help when he had his first competition in April, obviously it's not happening now so as he's now on holiday I can't say how well it's worked, my vet thought it should last a year but can be topped up with steroids if more is needed in the meantime, that's the way I interpreted in.

Oh wow, I’ve only just noticed this. How rude.

Your OP did not make it clear that you were asking for advice re post lockdown treatment. I presumed that you were unaware that vets are currently not doing joint injections, so I posted the then current guidelines for general information. Additionally, if you had read the post correctly, you might have deduced that I also have a horse part way through a treatment program, but whose ongoing treatment has stalled due to CV19.

By the way, I do recommend looking into arthrimed injections. More expensive than steroid injections but longer lasting and, being steroid free, no elevated risk of lami.

Horselover, thanks for the suggestions - IRAP ? Bozmerix ? Facilited Arthrodesis ? Could you expand on these a bit for me please? they sound interesting, and I'll have a google later.
