hi all,

i have a 6 (7 this May) year old comp horse . No soundness issues or injuries with regular physio and chiro apts. I am just musing about putting her on a joint supplement as a preventative/maintenance of her joints.
would i be best off just feeding her a MSM/gloucousamine mix? is there a supplement with this mix?

All competition horses where I am have FlexAbility Professional from Science Supplements, including my seven year old who has been on it for the last 18 months or so, or Topspec 10:10.

In my mind, prevention is better than cure (competition legal supplements, of course)

best Joint supplement where I have used for the past 15 years and seen 98% improvement in every animal ( 9 ) is Flexi Joint by Equimins, the reviews speak for itself.

I’ve just used MSM till now on my rising 10 pony. I Am going to try Equimins Glucosaflex, it’s got MSM & glucosamine and isn’t that inexpensive. I use the flexi joint on my 21 year old who I always fed a joint supplement to. Am convinced is why she’s still in full work

I've used the human version of this for 20 years now, and definitely notice when I run out. Suspect I'd be in a worse state without it as I was close to quitting riding when I started it and am still going (sort of)... So I'd probably go to this for other animals as a first choice, not least because the service is reliable. Oh yes. I quizzed them quite hard on the ethics of the raw materials and was satisfied...

I have just started my rising 8yo on a joint supplement as a preventative measure - due to his PSSM he is in fairly heavy work for a little cob and so I want to look after him. I've put him on Omega Equine Flexology as it was recommended by someone else who feeds it at the yard, although I now like the look of that Equimins one!

Tried a few but currently use naf superflex. They are expensive but I think good quality ingredients are pricey. A horse feed nutritionalist said she tried costing out the actual recommended daily allowances (she believed no supps on the market currently do this fully) and it was extortionate !

Thank you.
i was leaning towards either the NAF glucosamine with MSM or the equine america glucosamine + MSM . i was thinking this as a base and then can move up to to more complex supplements like the naf superflex.
However, do you think it is money better just going straight for the superflex or similar ?

Nothing to add other than this was exactly what I was thinking and so will be watching this thread with interest :)

My Connie is 13, currently on Pink Powder and Micronised Linseed and I'm looking to add something in as a preventative measure...

I put my boy on Equine America Glucosamine with MSM when I got him at 5! Again just because I hoped it would help with wear and tear - no idea if its working or not! My other horse was 15 when I got him and I found a massive difference when I put him on Equine Answers Premierflex but he was already an old man at that stage (hard life before I got him!) So I think I could leave the stronger supplements until he is older :)

I‘m not very scientific in my approach but I looked at the % and think there was a good David marlin article with a graph which was also helpful. From what I’d read I was looking for glucosamine particularly (vet recommended this as a general supp) but MSM and chondroitin seemed to be a good mix and and has a good balance. The difficult in using it as a preventative is that you don’t really know if it’s worked !

I have a vet who specialises in 'Loss of Performance' and I took one of mine to see him. He examined him & ended up medicating his coffin joint. The result was incredible, the horse was back to his best. He needs this re doing about ever 9-12 months. The vet had joint supplements on shelves in the reception & I asked him if they were any good. Basically he said not really, medication is the best way to go nut people want it so I sell it.

Everyone has different opinions on the subject. I think since the horse is so young I would probably would be reluctant to go down that road. Since supplements are expensive. That’s only my opinion personally I probably won’t put a horse on a joint supplement until they 15 years old.
