Hello all,

My arthritic mare is becoming uncomfortable and stiff and I’m wanting to put her on a joint supplement that can be hand fed, as she lives out 24/7 with no hard feed.

She also has cushings and has her prascend tablet daily with a herbal treat, I’m lucky she’s easy to give meds to :)

Does anyone have any ideas what I can give her the relieve the pain in her joints without giving her a feed?

Tia

Pain in their joints is never easy to treat with a general supplement because what works well for one horse will do nothing for another and they all take a fair amount of time to get into their system so you may not know how well they are working, or not, for a few weeks possibly longer which means you are using trial and error to an extent which is not really fair on a horse that is obviously uncomfortable.
I am not sure any are going to be easily fed with a treat or even in an apple so would get in a bag of feed that can be soaked and mix in with a token amount of that each day, it really shouldn't be difficult to do and will only take her a minute or two to eat.

Personally if she is in pain and likely to get worse as the weather gets colder I would not mess about with joint supplements that may do no good I would get her onto bute that is proven to work and accept she needs a daily feed, as she is on prascend your vet must see her to prescribe that so may well be happy to prescribe her bute without having to see her first.

As BP says, as she's now noticeably stiff it would likely be best for her to crack on with bute or danilon, which will be more effective than any supplement in keepimg her comfortable. Your vet will need to be in the loop on this and advise on dosage etc.
I can get away with a single handful of agrobs aspero chaff with my arthritic Cushing's dustbin mare to mix in I prascend tablet, I sachet of Danilon, salt, a cupful of micronised linseed, boswellia and forageplus balancer. I give this as a bucket feed.

Hi be positive,

Yes she has been on bute previously and that was reduced and then stopped when I changed her lifestyle a couple of years ago. I am not against feeding her if that's the only option and am aware of the trial and error of joint supplements, having used them for many years now, but I am looking to see if anything exists that can be hand fed as this will be the best option for her, if such a thing exists.

Thanks for your reply. The vets are involved with her management and have been for the past few years so no problem putting her back on bute if needs be. I'm just wanting to avoid the daily walk up and down the hill to take her out of the herd to feed her as prefer her to stay on flat ground. If it's the only option then so be it, but thought it worth asking if anything exists that can be hand fed.

Is she fussy?
Could you just feed a danilon sandwich by hand?

I'm off to the clinic this afternoon to get some danilon and the nurses and receptionists are coming up with a list of ideas to hand feed it :) One to add if they don't think of it, thankyou!
