Hi All
We have a 13 year old ex racer TB, he is naturally laid back and not a fizzy type and is currently fed hay and carrots with a mineral lick in his stable. He raced until he was 6 (flat and hurdles) then evented until he was 10, and is currently used for RC/general hacking etc.
He is sometimes stiff behind when he starts work, which eases as he warms up, and we would really like to put him on a joint supplement, however, this is where the problem starts...!! Every time we have tried any form of hard feed, he has been a complete nightmare the next day. First time we tried half a Stubbs scoop of Happy Hoof, tried to ride him the next day and he was totally out of character, spooking, bucking, jogging and very unsettled on the yard. Stopped feed, back to normal next day. A few weeks later we tried Allen and Page fast fibre, which my pony is on, and lunged him the next day, just in case....same reaction, he nearly fell over exploding! Same reaction on D&H Equi Bites. We gave up then, however last week I thought we should try again, just in case it was a co-incidence...so gave him a handful of Bailey's Outshine, on the theory that it's just oil and it may help with his joints....well, 2 strands of electric tape later and several laps of other horses' fields, have decided he cannot cope with any sort of hard feed. It's almost like an allergic reaction! Next day, back to normal!
He is fine energy wise on current feed of hay and carrots, mellow but enough energy for some cheeky bucks now and again and endless stamina.
Can anyone think of a joint supplement we can try that can be fed without a hard feed? Failing that, we may have to grate one of his carrots so the powder sticks, but he's very fussy...tried rose hips but wouldn't touch them!
Sorry for long email...
Any ideas much appreciated
Thanks
