Hello!

I have a 12.2h 36 year old retired pony. she had arthritis in her joints as you would expect at her age. She has bute daily and osteopen monthly (injectable). As many horse owners out there I’m lost in a world of joint supplements. She has had a maintenance one for a while but feel she could do with something with a bit more umph that focuses on anti-inflammatory and comfort. I’ve so far I’ve narrowed it down to Cosequin, Ria flex, pharmaquin, pernamax, corta-flex and synequin. I wondered if anyone with horses as old as mine have actually had any luck with any of these? I’ve also looked at some buteless type products, although finding ones that can be used along side bute has been challenging. Any help is appreciated.

How fantastic to have your pony get to such a good age!

I'm afraid I can't offer any experience of such an old horse, but my 21 y/o TB is on joint supplements. However, at the age of your pony, and given she is getting such good veterinary support, I personally don't see that any supplement could offer much extra.

If you really wanted to try something, I would look to the ones which are banned for competition use, on the basis that they probably actually do something. I would start with Devils Claw.

Harpagyl, seems very effective and is competition-banned. Good luck.

Boswellia is anti inflammatory and is fairly cheap to get from Ebay for 1kg - I feed it to mine who has just had bone chip surgery and now needs joint support. I also got bogged down in all the different supplements so asked ChatGPT which was the best one in terms of active ingredients and how much of said ingredient you get in the dosage given and it said the below:

give the bute are cartophen you are wasting your money IMO, no supplement can add anything to those so stick with the actual drugs

My vet advised that once they have progressed arthritis, there is not much a joint supplement will do as they are really only designed to support a healthy joint, so you can often be wasting your money. She advised that the only supplement worth feeding, which they do suggest, is one high in Boswellia as it has a proven anti-inflammatory effect. Boswellia can also be fed safely alongside Bute and she advised she had seen a marked improvement in her clients horses that were already on Bute when Boswellia was introduced.
