My greyhound is 8, and saw the vet last week for a limp that I think may be an old racing injury, as he had a limp on the same leg a few years ago. The vet said it's slightly arthritic, and gave him some Metacam. He doesn't go off lead, so other than a quick zoomie in the garden sometimes, doesn't exactly tear about. He also had a broken hock, which ended his racing days.

Although he moves freely and doesn't look stiff, It's made me think that I need to start him on a joint supplement before arthritis really sets in. I'm wondering if he needs one of the multi-ingredient supplements that contains hyaluronic acid and green lipped muscle such as Yumove, or whether just glucosamine and chondroitin would be enough at this stage. I'm also wondering whether adding fish oil would help too. There are so many joint supplements out there that my head hurts from looking! Money is tight so I'd rather not spend more than I have to, but will obviously buy a more comprehensive supplement if that's what he needs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm finding Green lipped mussel capsules from Amazon work really well and under £10 for 90 which is 30 days supply. I also feed oily fish 3-4 times a week

Could you tell me which ones you buy please? GLM looks to be one of the more effective things, but I know that some supplements don't contain what they say, so I'm cautious of buying just anything.

Feeding oily fish is a good idea, what kind do you feed? I've since read that fish oil goes rancid quickly, so am unsure about buying that. Tinned fish won't have that problem.

This is the one I use - comes in larger packs too, and doesn't contain rice powder, which my cocker is sensitive too, and I just feed sardines in sunflower/olive oil from the supermarket 60p a can!! bargain!

Bandit is on the Aviform capsules, not because he has a problem but he does agility and he always flying around so more of a preventative. I also feed him oily fish in sunflower oil, normally sardines or mackerel, but he seems to prefer mackerel and also for treats he gets those sprats what absolutely stink but he loves them.

I had Fodhla on yumove from when I got her and then when she got dx with hip dysplasia I did some more research and I now have her on Riaflex. She seems to be doing well on it, but her HD is v mild and not super noticeable anyway so hard to tell. Will be following this thread though to see what else is recommended!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've ordered their Canine Joint Plus and Green Lipped Mussel. I'm so glad that I didn't order Yumove, as after searching on here I discovered that it's overpriced and not very effective. Riaflex sounds a much better buy, and I'd rather support a small business too.

Yes I think I panic bought the yumove when I first brought her home and was panic buying her all sorts, the power of advertising!

I use their Canine Joint Plus and Green Lipped Mussel for my 10 year old greyhound too, as he's recently got a bit stiff in the hind legs on occasion.

Their advertising sounds very convincing, and it does get a lot of good reviews. I could so easily have bought it again. I gave Yumove to another greyhound with arthritis, I think it made some difference but not a lot!

Have you found they've helped? My boy broke a hock racing, so I imagine it will become arthritic. I'm hoping the supplements will help ward it off.

I swear by yumove advance for my elderly labrador, as @splashgirl45 said the cheaper one was useless.
My dog was xrayed which showed elbow arthritis, the yumove advance left her completely sound with no stiffness in the morning, I took her off the yumove advance and the stiffness and lameness returned, on going back onto yumove she went back to being sound and not stiff. Despite the arthritis she remained sound until last year, now on librela, which is another game changer!
Metacam was ineffective for her.

I think so...like you said, it's kind of hard to tell though! He's only been on them for 3 months or so, and I'm sure they take a while to start making a difference. He had his booster jab/check-up at the vets today and they were happy with his movement, but said he's bound to be a bit arthritic so keep an eye on him for e.g. struggling to stand from lying down and in that case we'll try something stronger e.g. Librela.

I would try Riaflex boswellia before Librela, it has worked wonders for our JRT with hock arthritis. She is also on the Canine joint plus and the Green lipped mussel.

I read that he is and that you mentioned possibly going onto Librela, our dog, gradually over a long time went from occasional lame steps to being mainly non weight bearing on 1 hind leg. In less than a week on Riaflex boswellia she was sound on both hind legs and hasn't had any problems since. This was over 18 months ago.

Not my experience at all with YuMove - I’ve used it for a number of ageing dogs including greyhounds and really rate it, it is extremely effective.
