Hello all - my cob x tb mare, who is 12 yrs old, has recently started going stiff with her movement through her hind legs after when coming to the end of her seasons. Last time she looked terrible and I had a physio out to her, which cured it. She's a bit stiff this time but is not half as bad, I've been hacking her steadily to keep her moving. Now - well done for getting this far!! - I'm wondering whether I should try giving her some sort of joint supplement? Which do people use and what sort of success? I have looked at the Blue Chip RLF but at £45 a bottle it's just a little too expensive as I'd plan to use it long term - or can the RLF just be used as a boost when the horse is stiff? Sorry for the mass amount of questions and hope you can make sense of it!!

I use Premierflex HA from Equine Answers. It definitely seemed to make an improvement to FB's stiffness and made him more flexible in his back and hind legs. It is not too pricey, although you have to load it for the first month so you use more. It is about £40 for an alleged 120 day supply and the service is good.

Do you know why she gets stiff? Sounds very unusual and I would get it checked out 1st.

Would sound to be more muscular than joint IMO so supplement probably wouldn't have much effect....

In terms of joint supplement, I use Feel Good 30 Joint and Relief which is fab for my elderly arthritic boy - keeps him comfortable and supports as well.

I use devil's claw too, but Equine Answers also do a Premierflex that includes DC, and it works out cheaper than buying the two separately. I may get it next time.

How strange, i thought my mare was the only one to suffer from back problems linked to seasons.

Never have a single problem all winter but spring she suffers horrendously and thru summer she comes round stiff thru her season. She does have an enlarged ovary one side.

I use Vetvits Equiflex on all of mine and have really noticed a difference in 2 of them, the other 1 i'm not so sure its made any difference so it really depends what suits your horse. Expensive trying different ones but go for the cheaper alternatives 1st and give them a good month trial.

if she is just geerally stiff put does not have a medical problem as such i would just pop her on some clo or some omega oils and nettle very good for keeping joints supple!
