So my boy has been on Cortaflex Regular Strength for around 1 year and a half now. It's been really good so far but this hard ground has really started making him stiff again.

He suffers from mild arthritis causing stiffness in one joint, so the natural solution is to help it with a joint supplement, but clearly Regular Cortaflex just isn't strong enough anymore.

So I've looked around, read reviews, price checked etc etc, but which supplement would you recommend to switch to if Cortaflex just isn't cutting it anymore?

I've got a shortlist down:

Cortaflex HA Super Strength
Suppleaze Gold by Aviform
Blue Chip Joint RLF
Newmarket Joint Supplement
PremierFlex HA

Of course if anyone knows if any other good supplements for similar prices to those listed above please do let me know!

I asked my vet about feeding Cortaflex to my old boy and his response was to snort and tell me "you might as well feed him a cup of sugar every day for all the effect Cortaflex has"!

I gave mine JointFX which was brilliant. If I ever ran out, without a few days he would stiffen right up and it would take a couple of weeks of being back on it to loosen up again. It's not cheap but I really rate it.

You could also think about adding micronised linseed which is supposed to contain the correct ratio of omega 3:omega 6 fatty acids for horses.

If Cortaflex isn't working for him anymore you could try something different that the standard joint supps as they are all very similar ingredients?

I use Vetroflex (Hydrolysed Collagen) for my boy, but it is more expensive than those you have listed I think OR you could try going completely natural? i.e. http://www.equinatural.co.uk/epages...hops/BT3755/Products/036/SubProducts/036-0001

I have looked into Vetroflex as it is still in my price range (up to £45 per month), plus I'd get a discount from my work and I could get 1kg for £49.99 rather than £69.99. Would he need to be put on the Vetrofen at the same time though to see a noticeable improvement? He is currently on Devil's Relief from NAF, so should I just keep him on a maintenance dose of that + Vetroflex if I were to use it?

I have thought about adding Linseed oil to his diet. My only issue is that they don't do JointFX in smaller quantities, I can only seem to find the 2.7kg for £75ish, which is a lot to pay out in one go for something that I can't guarantee will work. If they did a smaller pot for less money then I would give them a try.

I was told by animallife that after my boy had been on Vetroflex for 3 months I could probably stop the Vetrofen, but I havent even started using the Vetrofen yet as he is on Danillon for his Tendon Tear... so I guess any pain relief or anti-inflammatory lLike Devils Claw) would be fine and then hopefully you could stop once he'd been on the Vetroflex for 3 months. I did use the loading does first!

Regarding Linseed - you can feed either Miscronised or Cold Pressed - you can buy both from Equimins for around £10 in small quantities to try. If you decide it does work then you can buy the cold pressed oil in 5 Litre cans fro mEquimins for £22 or a 20kg sack for £38 - it really isn't expensive and lasts forever :)

My horse is recovering from a fracture and I had Equi Elements recommended to me, it's a silicone supplement. It is for joints as well as bone strength. I can't say which is working better as he is also on Suppleaze Gold, but when he is back in full work I will test them against each other to see which works best. I've just moved him onto rehab livery and it turns out that the YM there really recommends the Equi Elements one too and uses the human version, so it seems like it has been doing some good! It is also very good value, as is £20 a month at the regular dose.
