can anyone tell me what the best joint supplement is at the moment on the market .I have seen the 5 star superflex is this any good or will the cheaper ones do just as good a job. Or would i be better going for something with Devils claw in it? The sort I am looking for is for treating an old injury and stiffness.

A mare I look after has had NAF Superflex and its worked wonders for her. My horse is on VetVits Equiflex and shes done well on that one too. I met the NAF rep once at a Saddlery and he told me its all about whats in the powders thats pure, ie some of them are filled with a lot of other ingredients to bulk them up, eg dextrose - sugar. My vet endorsed the Vetvits one, its available online with free P&P.

Absolutely 100% recommend Premierflex HA by Equine Answers, or Cosequin which I am now using only because my vets are trialling it and thought my chap (coffin joint injury caused by twist of fetlock in the field) would be a great candidate. If you don't necessarily want prescription supplement go for Premierflex

thank you that Premierflex sounds brillant I will be giving that a go but in a plus as miles cheaper than adding the devils claw with it aswell.

devils claw is homeopathic and it does load the liver far more than bute or danellon!!!! msm, chondroitin may be suitable. talk to your vet he didnt train for nothing!

sorry being a bit thick here

devils claw is that better or worse ? will be speaking to the vet when he comes out at the end of the week but till then.......

Devils claw is homeopathic (by which people infer 'natural' or 'not synthetic') and many therefore assume it is 'better'. This isn't always the case as the products tend not to be regulated and their quality varies massively- also meaning that their side effects can vary too.

The poster above states that one of the recognised side effects of feeding Devils Claw is a detrimental effect on the liver (which the painkillers bute and danillon are always condemned for) and they are highlighting that just because Devils Claw is 'natural' doesn't make it 'harmonious' or pure goodness for your horse

.... I have to be honest I don't know much about homeopathy, I am from the school of thought where the best thing for a headache is a pint of water and a nurofen and I don't have time for herbs unless they are on my dinner plate
