I have recent got a ex-racehorse whos has been out of work for 1-2 years in the field. He ran 3 races and was then disguarded. I have been riding him for about a week and his joints are a bit creaky (not overly bad) and his gaits are a bit restricted. I thought that i may give him a joint supplement just in case, does anyone suggest any? and which are good for ex-racehorses in particular? thanks :)

Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM can all be helpful - though do check/choose carefully between the supplements available, as can vary a LOT in their quality/amount of ingredient used! My own horse has an aloe vera based supplement (with the 3 above ingredients in as well), which seems to help.

If your horse hasn't done much for a while, it will take a bit of time to get fitness up - if you've not, maybe an idea to see an animal physio or similar for advice on a fittening/rehab programme?? :)

I've got a 7yr old ex-racer myself, and I would recommend either NAF Superflex or if you are feeling a little flusher then Cortaflex HA - this really is the best joint supplement with proven clinical trials supporting it.

I would also recommend a very low protein, high fibre diet - with even a gastric supplement to ensure you're boy is as comfortable as possible when you bring him back into work?

Also keep an eye on your saddle, as he puts on weight and condition as a riding horse he will change lots and sometimes very quickly. My boy was 16.1 when I bought him off the track, he's now 16.3!!

Good luck - i love to hear about another ex-racer getting a new job!

I use Equimins Flexijoint for my pony and have had excellent results with it. I used Cortaflex HA liquid for years but I found this didn't work for him unless I kept it up to the full dosing amount. Flexijoint is also much cheaper and comes with a money back guarantee :)
