Just come back from the vet - he said my 8 year old lurcher has signs of early arthritis in her hips - I'd kind of guessed this as she has been getting sore and stiff in her back end after any extreme exercise (which is sometimes unavoidable with lurchers!) I just wasn't sure which joints it was.

So - vet recommended joint supplements - naturally the ones they sell in the practice ;-) but I wanted to do a bit more research! What do you lot rate? Vet said a good mix is ideal including greenlipped mussel extract.

She is also fed a predominantly raw diet so I'm happy to look at that sort of stuff too!
 
I use riaflex canine joint plus and their green lipped mussel powders. For my boys weight he was having 6 yumove advance tablets a day to his disgust. At about £40 a month i think. Riaflex has higher levels of all the good stuff in than anything else ive found and its great value for money as well. My boy is 9 and is high mileage so i started to give it as a matter of course as opposed to a dramatic change in behaviour and he also had a neck injury last year so figure any anti inflam will provide support in the future. They have a fb page that has offers sometimes.
 
Thanks Dobermonkey - I'll look at Riaflex. It was Yumove that the vet recommended - mine would need 2 tabs a day, although they recommended a loading dose for a few weeks so would be 4 a day. Would work out expensive and she's fussy with tablets unless they REALLY taste nice.

I really wouldn't want to have to go down the wormer administration route with mine if she's having 4 a day - stuffed in cheese or ham, she'd get very fat..!
 
We put our dog on cortaflex and it has made a humongous difference to her, it took 5 years off her, she was 9 when we started her on it and had slowed down (she's done both cruciates so had stiffened). She was like a 4yo again, we had several people comment on how bouncy she had become.

I wouldn't be without it now for her, us or the horse :lol:
 
Yumove is actually quite good, and there has been a study on it by the RVC. Generally cheaper to buy online. My very fussy collie would eat them happily....and he wouldn't really eat much in the way of dog food or dog treats! Also have had some good experiences with synoquin.
 
My rott is on Nutraquin+ which I get from my vet. It does help him as he has arthritis and is now 9 so getting on in rotty years! I did try him and his late sister on Green lipped mussel but it had no effect on either of them. Worked miracles on an older horse I had though.

If you look at dog products on their website at the bottom of the page there is a comparison tab which shows the levels of active ingredient in a variety of products
 
My three all eat yumove just put on top of their dinner. The labs would eat anything but old lurcher is fussy and she hoovers it up. It smells disgusting (to my nose) but they are keen. It has made a huge difference to ours, old lurcher is now only on 2 yumove a day no steroids at all and middle aged lab moves better on it, she has bad elbows.
 
Mine's on green lipped mussel and salmon oil (avoid cod liver, it's too high in vitamin A, very bad for them. Keep her lean and build the muscle round the affected area. Walking through sand and up hill is good.
 
Yumove, and I rate it so far for the whippet, especially for dogs prone to sensitive tums.

It eaten without much fuss, but for some reason he dislikes one version (think it was the young dog one), but likes the bog standard one.
 
I give my mini poodle Yumove too, she's 12 has arthritis in her hips, elbows and lower back, is so so much better since having these. Very very fussy dog, but eats these like treats :)

I buy turmeric and ginger root by the kilo from an organic grocer in town, and buy turmeric and ginger powder in kilo bags from Frontier.
 
I use a product called Canine Gold, which is tumeric & coconut oil based, & order it from their website. I find it works well & have seen a marked difference in several of my dogs, pretty quickly. I raw feed too - chicken feet contain lots of glucosamine, which is good for joints.
