Hi everyone

My mare is approaching 13 and generally in great health but she is in quite heavy work so was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good overall joint supplement to keep them the best they can be - prevention better than cure and all that!
Thanks in advance!

Vet chiro recommended the science supplement one to me (there’s 2- one is marginally better but can’t remember which I’ve got but it was about £70 for a month supply.

It’s one of the only ones actually recognised as having the correct levels of everything to work and is the only one frequently mentioned and recommended in some veterinary publication.
I started my girls on it about 3 months ago.

Have you noticed an improvement?

It’s difficult to say purely because the girls have barely done any work over the last 3 months. I’ve put Millie on it as a preventative mainly, so not sure I would notice much anyway at this stage. Polly is the one who does suffer from stiffness as a result of arthritic changes, but she’s done no work since November so aside from going to the field and back, I haven’t really looked at her moving properly. I’m happy enough to keep them on it while we come into the spring and summer and hopefully then I’ll get a better idea as they’ll both return to normal workload.

I've started my 11 year old madam on Turmeric supplement as a precaution atm MSM sent her loopy as does seaweed & molasses (no reaction to alfalfa or oats ?‍♀️)

I'm saving the more "serious" supplements for future use touch wood.

One thing I would say is if your horse has had gastric ulcers in the past or is currently suffering from them or you suspect. they might be - turmeric should be avoided. Just had my boy scoped and have been researching all the things he can't eat

That's interesting, I haven't read that before. Do you have a link to things that ulcer-prone horses shouldn't eat? My horse has had ulcers and I know that they shouldn't have too much starch/concentrated feed and that alfafa is preferred (of course depends on the horse too), but hadn't read about the more unusual ones. Thanks!

I hadn't heard that either & I've read a few articles that say turmeric may actually guard against gastric ulcers ?

i really recommend equine america's kentucky joint supplement - i have used it since it was first marketed and have been really impressed. they altered the formula about twelve months ago and it's even better. also much cheaper than cortaflex. it's the one the MD really recommends and has had a huge amount of input into

I have a horse with mild hock arthritis and had him on boswellia and I find this works for him, I have tried a lot of the other joint supplements and he just doesn't look as good so have stuck with it, I also feed msm to both of my horses it's cheap enough and my vet even recommended it when they both had soft tissue injuries.

I tried tumeric and it caused really loose droppings so stopped feeding it.
