I think that Thumper may benefit from a joint suppliment. I'm absolutly sure that I don't need to go down the Synaquin route, however.

What does everyone else use - and has it helped with general stiffness?

What about adding cod liver oil to his feed if he's not too stiff?

Actually that's not an option I had considered. And would certainly be a cheapish one......

cheap option could be cider vinegar but have you thought about Mobifor? worked well on my mare when I took her off Synequin and my mare that I had used all the vet joint supplements on.

I use cider vinegar after much research into "maintenance" of joints. Get the proper cloudy stuff though

I have used cortaflex, good though expensive. However, I find Cairo who is showing signs of old age stiffness plus low ringbone is doing really well on a combination of instant linseed - great for aging joints and I use Equine America MSN - far cheaper than cortaflex and combined with the instant linseed has shown an improvement in the old chaps's hocks and general movement. He also wears magnetic bands for the low ringbone all the time - without them he is lame.

My last horse looked really good on the Super Codlivine supplement, the one for supple joints. The click in his stifle ceased and he was absolutley blooming. He was still on it for a while after being diagnosed with ringbone but then the insurance paid for Synequin so we stopped the codlivine. Great stuff, makes coats gorgeous especially dapples and colouration..

My horse who is arthritic, in on a glucosamine supplement as recommended by the vet, and the instant linseed. My other horse, who has no joint problems that I am aware of, has instant linseed as a preventative measure.

I give spring Omega 3 and 6 oils (made by NAF I think), she isn't really stiff but has a slightly clicky stifle. I think that it is those particular omega oils which have been shown to be beneficial for cartilage maintenance - plus it makes her nice and shiny!

I used cortaflex powder for 5 years on my now 18yo - swapped on last lot to the new Equine America Glucosamine and MSM £13.99 stuff and have not noticed a jot of difference other than to my bank balance.

I give George NAF superflex as a preventative, he's been on it 5 weeks now and seems freer (maybe it's my imagination!). I don't like the idea of giving cod liver oil to herbivores??

I've tried lost of different ones for my horse's spavin - Including the best known brand.
Have to say that he is currently on feedmark's extraflex HA and I truly have noticed a remarkable difference, esp if he comes off it for periods of time (if I run out). It is keeping him going I believe. Can't say I was ever sure the others were making a significant difference. I do have him on the optimum level rather than the maintenance level though. At the mo they have 50% off.
