do you think they are too harsh ? my boy keeps getting his tongue over his straight bar even with a guard on ! he flips it over the striaght bar, he has a gaurd on his snaffle at home and doenst do it, should i put him in a jointed pelham and see if that helps ?

Ive got one if u want to borrow it? Baron is usually in a french link loose ring snaffle and he goes fine in the pelham (well you know as you have seen him).

I think its 5 1/2 inch and is a Rugby Pelham.

ETA: I can pop up tomorrow on the way to the yard if you like, or u can call round at mine and get it?
 
I'm not a fan of single joints

I suppose at least when the shanks come into to play the joint is angled downwards rather than to the roof of the mouth.

However your horse is probably complaining about tongue pressure and will need a high wide port for relief.

You could also try a waterford mouthpeice, as although they put pressure on the tongue they do make it easier for the horse to swallow.
