Jointed/straight-bar kimblewicks?!

okay I'm slightly confused. I've always used kimblewicks with a straight bar/port and slits in the bit ring (see below). I can understand that attaching the reins to the slits in bit ring mean that when you pull the reins you apply poll pressure and the curb chain tightens.

However, recently I've seen both kimblewicks which are jointed and those without the grooves, and sometimes both on the same bit (see below). I can't see how the curb could be effective in this case, as surely the nutcracker action of the link would stop the poll pressure and curb tightening...?

Can anyone help with my confusion?! Are there advantages/disadvantages to having slits/port/joint/certain combinations??
