Just wondering what people think about these jackets that have various protection pads in?

I could do with another jacket anyway and having a smashed elbow I would be keen not to damage it again as it is still not up to full flexion 5 months on, and I think it would boost my confidence on the roads as I feel really vulnerable.
I like the idea of wearing a body protector out hacking as tarmac is hard! I kind of think I'd be more likely to hurt myself in a road accident/fall on tarmac (since I appear to be accident prone these days) than I would doing XC or anything like that!
I do have a BP but it is a bit old style so I don't really like riding in it, I haven't tried it with new saddle that actually fits me but it has previously banged on the back of the saddle which was annoying.
I could just get a new BP but it won't protect my poor mangled arm!
