Judging a pony by its cover

I'm afraid the first thing I notice about a horse is what it looks like . . . does it have good bone, is it athletic-looking, does it have decent conformation, is it "eye catching" . . . then I worry about temperament (which is extremely important to me - when horse shopping I tried lots of lovely horses who were just not for me/didn't have that "something" in terms of personality/temperament). I don't worry about colour at all and I'm not THAT bothered by breed, although I do like horses with "substance" so anything fine and delicate is out - simply because I am not a small person so need something with bone/strength to carry me.

So, yes, I do judge a pony by it's cover - although it's more about what catches my eye enough for me to want to know more, rather than being swayed just by looks alone.

P

P.S. When I saw Kal's ad, I was very taken with him . . . when we drove onto the yard to try him, I fell instantly in love . . . not only was he a very attractive horse, but he just had an indefinable sparkle/lovely way about him.

In theory I avoid white markings as they are more trouble than they are worth. Only thing is, I don't take my own advice, so have one with sensitive pink skin on his back legs, one with a big pink nose, and one with a big pink nose, a big white face (so pink cheekbones and eyebrows) and four white legs.

After owning and riding pretty much everything, I find I get on well with part bred Arabs and TB's... so naturally I have native ponies. I must admit I do love their character and usually find that once you have practically exhausted yourself with the work put into them, they are loyal, hardworking and fun.
I'm not a fan of coloured anything, it's just a matter of taste.

I would never look at an arab or a TB.. arabs cos I think they're ugly and TBs cos I've only had bad experiences with them.
I've only ever bought horses with pretty faces too - Carmen Lanny once said to me 'I always buy horses with a pretty face - theyre just as likely to be bad - but when you've had a bad day with a pretty horse - at lease you've got something nice to look at...'

This completely, I have to admit I am not attracted to lots of mane and feather, bit I can appreciate a smart clipped cob! My ideal type will always be a native or Irish x I like the hybrid vigour and versatility.
