Im 8 and half (ish) st, 5ft7ish and ride a 12.2hh chunky pony .. yes im too tall for him him (cant jump without stirrups as I knock the jumps down ) but we jump around 3ft together and he doesnt seem to be showing any signs of difficulty in carrying me ... just the other day I was sat on him talking to my friend holding the reins on the buckle with a jump a few metres in front of us when he decided he wanted to jump so took of over the jump, stopped and looked very chuffed with himself
I would like to make a point that hasn't been mentioned yet.
Any pony/horse will struggle a bit at first if the weight it is used to carrying is suddenly increased - ie horse whos owner was 9 stone is sold to new owner who is 13 stone.
It also follows that if a horse is ridden by a rider of 12 stone well balanced - then sold to a complete novice at the same weight it will have a harder job trying to compensate.
The truth is none of us will ever really know how much weight each horse can carry as sadly horses cannot talk and even if they try to comunicate in other ways they are often ignored.
Like the poor little horse that I saw last week. Barely 15.2hh 4year old weak tb ex flat horse bought from a dealer by a girl who admits to being 18 stone and is trying to ride said horse in a saddle bought for £20 from ebay ( which had a broken tree!)
She called me out because the horse wouldn't move when she got on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do think that correct tack is one of the most important things, If a saddle isn't fitting it's only going to be worse for the horse with a heavier rider.
but just reading through and saying that although i'm on a diet, i currently weight 12st 7 and ride a chunky 13.3. have done so for the last 6 years although was 11 and 8ish stone when i first started riding her (first got her then). she has no trouble carrying me and can still buck/take off/ be strong with me on board. lighter riders actually have some trouble with her strength wise! i think shes just been used to carrying me and over years has gotten stronger with it?
however she turned 12 this year and thats the main reason i'm losing weight-i dont want her to have to be lugging me around when shes say, 17, and i'm still fat!
btw i am 5ft 3.
us a couple years back, does she look unhappy?:
I always would say that a tb can be a good weight carrier UNTIL i lost over a stone and a half. The differance is HUGH to the way he behaves so I am sorry weight does make a differance to some horses. I was just over 12 stone on a ex flat racer 15.2 hh - now i am down to 10 and a half its like having wings on your horse. God knows what he will be like when i get back down to 9 and a half - but thats where we are aiming for.#
I'm 11 stone 6, 5'5'' and ride a 14.2hh 17 y/o Sect D X.
Due to her illness, I haven't ridden her in about 18 months (funnily enough, the time in which I've piled most weight on! )
and now am working towards losing some of that before I get back on her - to add, she has happily carried my mum (who is 16 stone) round the estate on a hack in walk so I don't know why I worry so much, I just don't like the idea of getting back on her at the size I am.
I ride the owner's other horse and at 16.2hh TBXID, she can quite happily pull stunts with me such as bucking and taking a 1ft jump at about 4ft, and catapulting me off the other side!!!
