First post on here! Have been lurking for quite a while and finally plucked up the courage to post...
So my horse and I comfortably jump round discovery and 1.05s with the occasional pole, and have qualified for the national amateur champs for 1m, now I think we need to make the jump up to something a bit more challenging, but I seem to have psyched myself up so much that I'm doubting we can do it. Max has all the scope to jump round something a lot bigger than 1.10 but occasionally I still duff up the strides. So what I need to know is how easy/difficult is the jump up?

I think it is quite a big step up to Newcomers - the key difference is there are more related distances and the oxers are wider. However, if you are jumping round discovery and 1.05m smoothly, confidently and in a good rhythm then there is no reason at all why you shouldn't step up! We all duff up some strides but provided its not a regular occurence then I am sure you will be fine!!

Just choose a day where there is a 1.05 then 1.10m and its fine, I think its a mental thing more than anything.

I agree it is a mental thing. If you jump 1m05 opens then the JO will be up to 1m15 so 1m10 will actually seem easier :) I think NC A7 JO is when you start to notice the different. Once you have bitten the bullet and jumped 1 you will wonder why you ever worried about it. Good Luck

Thanks everyone! Will find a show where there's a 1.05 first, thinking Felbridge as it's outdoors in which he jumps better, going to pick a date and just go for it! Definitely a mental thing for me :)

I'd try to jump some 1.15 fences at home, so that you're not intimidated by the height when you walk the NC. Duffing up a stride happens from time to time! Good luck.

In lessons at home I often jump about 1.20 and all (mostly) goes to plan, it's only when I worry about seeing strides rather than just thinking about getting the correct canter I duff it up.. Thankyou!

I always walk the course of the next class after mine so I get used to the height and technicality of the step up. I would want to be jumping 1.20 in a grid ( so you can't miss) at home too.

Good idea! Will do that this weekend! Not planning to jump it till 9th November, so have some more practice time :)
