Jump poles

Right strange question??

How long are jumping poles roughly and how thick.

I am trying to work it out and i reckon they are about 6ft long and 5inches thick.

Does that sound about right??

Only if you're jumping a stile

A standard pole is 12ft long and about 4" thick. At Hickstead they're 15ft long...

From browsing Robinsons, it seems they're around 10-12 foot long and 4 inches thick, but this does vary.

I just measured it and that looks MASSIVE!!!!! Thats why i thought it was 6ft LOL

Maybe thats coz i am sitting at my desk though

Normally 4" thick & will be either 12' or 10' long. If you are making your own jumps there is nothing stopping you having 3" thick poles, they do the job & are alot lighter to carry about.

Nope.....definitely 12ft is the standard width

You will get a different perspective in an open space don't forget

That just seems well long!!!

One jump is gonna take up half of the paddock ha ha

Yeah i am making my own jumps. We have the wings already but no poles

Unless anyone knows of a cheap place where you can buy them from

I have just been outside with the tape measure and it still looks massive!!!! I could fit 2 horses over the size of that!! ha ha

Therre's nothing stopping you having shorter poles at home. Near to me there's a company that makes garden furniture, gazebos etc & they sell the poles in either 3" or 4" diameter. I can't remember the price but they are not very expensive. I made my own wings, gates, brush fillers etc & by far the most expensive things are the cups.

I only buy 10ft poles for my arena - means I can get in as many jumps as I want - I found with the 12ft ones they took up too much space and were heavy to carry

I managed to get hold of some old hop poles for free - get someone to cut off the narrow end and they make great poles for practice jumps
