Jump saddle for flat backed pony types?

I will hopefully at some point soon be in the market for a jump saddle for the pony and the recent weather has left me doing more internet browsing :cool:. He's a flat backed low wide withered typical connie shape with quite a big front end.

He currently has a falcon hawk gp, which is lovely and comfy and fits him well but having ridden in a few proper jump saddles recently I'm being converted away from my trusty gp.

Saddlers near me aren't holding much second hand in stock to fit him let alone a specific jump saddle so I think its going to be a buy from some where else and get it adjusted to him.

Any ideas? I'm quite open to block arrangements and the like and I'm vertically challenged if that makes any difference :D
 
He looks, now he's all starved and abused (ie looks amazing and very fit... :p ), very like Bee. Her Albion Legend saddle fits perfectly and is Al's favourite saddle ever- very flat seated forward cut, so Al finds it very secure when Bee throws her funky moves...
 
I couldn't find an off the peg jump saddle for my 14hh flat-backed, witherless pony beast.

So got this made to measure -

Edited to add - this is the saddler's test saddle, not the final version which was about 1.5" shorter.

No idea but I suggest you don't do what I do and accidentally buy a beautiful new one on OH's credit card :o

I don't even feel guilty ;) :D
 
Saddles are too nice to be guilty about :D Especially new ones. Al's saddles are old and bashed up ones, not nearly as nice to look at!

Oh yeah sorry I forgot to put in my OP that he's actually a starved welfare case, how could I forget that?! :rolleyes::p

I have sat in a few albions and I was rather taken by them, midget proportions mean that they don't actually hold me in at all no matter how blocky they are. But I wasn't sure if I liked them as they were on a nice horse :p and blocks would be quite handy for when he throws some shapes...

Well as I don't have an OH that's not really an issue ;) but why have there not been pictures of nitty in her nice shiney new saddle yet?! :mad:

I had a cob who was shaped like a JA pony and had an Albion k2 which suited him well, he had no withers and was very flat backed!
 
I meant to take a photo yesterday but somehow managed to forget :confused:



I have a clinic on Sunday so hopefully there will be pictures from that (assuming I can persuade OH to the yard for a bit)

Have you tried to stand around outside for several hours this week. It's freezing! I was so glad to be done I scampered off home as quickly as possible!! And that's without mentioning how unimpressed madam was with me climbing on and off and on and off!

Same as with the farrier today!

Albion K2 worked well on my old boy, who was wide and flat-backed, and my current Irish boy is in an Ideal Impala, which I love, but doesn't fit my long legs so well. Good luck with your search. :)
 
We had loads of problems getting a saddle to fit our connie.

After no luck with 2 saddle fitters, 1 actually found a saddle to fit that was forward cut enough to jump in.

It's a Silhouette event. They only start at 16 1/2. This is the size we got which fit the pony but my daughters skinny bottom would have fit better into a smaller size!:D

Although we're now trying to get the saddler to come back out to re-fit it as the pony has lost weight and gained muscle and is starting to have back problems.
 
Pessoa makes some very barrel shaped models and I've seen a few very wide Ideals around. Also, don't immediately rule out the wide synthetic options.
 
I'm no help when it comes to saddles I'm afraid - but watching this thread with interest! My horse would appear very similar shaped to YP and could really do with investing in a jump saddle, as when I want my stirrups hunting length, my knee is about 2 inches overhanging the knee roll which isn't ideal! So let me know if you find the perfect solution :D

How about a WOW. I couldn't afford a brand new one, so I just got the WOW fitter out to my horse (who was very hard to fit) and then went off and bought all the parts second hand and then got her to put it together. Cost me about £1,200 in total I think - still much cheaper than buying brand new, think they're about £2,500 now? I love mine, really comfy and my horse loves it. Ive got a 17" seat (for me) and 16" panels for him as he's so short backed, so you can really mix and match so suit both you and the horse.

Long legs not an issue here! I'm quite happy jumping in a 15'' GP :o

Have heard that about them before and they don't come up for sale very often either which must be a good sign.

Yes he can take a much bigger saddle than I can, will look in to the silhouette thanks :)

Will let you know if we find any thing nice, being useless I also forgot to get any photos again today. It wont be until the summer though as I need to start working first.

Possibly an option if nothing else fits him. Not sure how he would react to the air though as apparently some horses don't like it?

We aren't that badly matched in what size saddle we take, I'm quite happy in a 17'' and so is he.

Medium I think... Medium/wide maybe?
 
I've got a Silhouette jump saddle aswell - can vouch for how nice it is to ride in! However, mine (sort of :o) fits my TB - very different to a flat backed pony, but I would imagine they can do different trees/panels etc.

Bronson was narrow but flat, and we had a Thorowgood Robert Whitaker saddle for him - fitted perfectly and whilst not massively forward cut (think more eventer saddle) it had adjustable knee blocks and was brilliant for both jumping and flatwork. I also used it on a NF and more recently a 12hh dartmoor pony, and it suited both :p However, mine is now a pretty old saddle (probs about 10?) and I'm not sure if they make them the same anymore...

A friend had a Stubben that fitted her flattish pony well, or if the Jeffries tree suits the YP you could see if they do a jump saddle on the same tree?
 
I have an Andaloosa (Appaloosa X Andalusian) who has the colours of an appy but shape of an Andy so very similar to yours; flat backed, broad shoulders and quite wide. I bought him a second hand Kent and masters s series jumping saddle and love it. Great for his shape and also had adjustable gullet and moveable blocks.

Please note, the thigh blocks are actually slightly different to picture and are more above your thigh, which I like as keeps you secure. Hope this helped :)
