Jump saddles are they worth it?

My arab has the barrel of a new forest pony according to my saddler, and my big lad also has huge shoulders. For them he recommended as mentionned above a saddle with a cut back head - long term big lad will most likely end up in a K2 but while still growing we go with cheaper second hand. He is currently in a Farrington jump saddle which we love. Arab has an old albion XC saddle, with as spotted cat says, the front of the flaps is super flexible and gives his shoulders full movement.
I think it depends on your horse's jump tho - I jumped my little one up to 1m in a GP and only went to a jump saddle once eventing BE. Big horse has a much more expressive jump and I was struggling to maintain my position in a GP so went to a jump when he was just 5 and only jumping up to 2'9.

Here is some, sorry if huge! :)

Not sure if these are any good.:)

Just ahd a look for stockists of the ideal impala which looks a nice saddle, my saddler shop stocks them so:confused: I am tempted to try a wow but any idea on price:confused:

Your girl looks v similar to the beige one I had - you'll be surprised how wide you need to go in a jump saddle to get the points in the right place.

You really shouldn't have a problem looking at her, a lot of saddlers "right off" jump saddles because of shoulders, which is rubbish as they CAN work! My mare has a huge barrell and shoulders, and has a single flap Equipe jump saddle. She seems to love it, it doesn't move, and it fits me well too! Would agree with Baggybreeches, I can't ride in GP's, and have a jump saddle to do everything in :)

Yes I love my jump saddle and my position really improved when I changed from a GP.

I think they say a GP is OK for up to 1m?

Alot of jump saddles are now close contact and short pointed, I am sure you will find one to fit.

Katb - Funny a horse on our yard "could not find a jump saddle to fit" the GP they were sold fits dreadfully and rocks!!!

So basically you're all saying my saddler is just trying to get me to spend a fortune on having one made instead of helping me shop around for one to fit her ?

This is why I can't seem to trust them, been through a few (should of stuck with first one!!) and all seem useless!! :(

Having been mis-sold two saddles, by a qualified saddle fitter, whom I questioned at the time, I then spent a lot of time learning about saddle fit. So now when saddlers come out, I know what I am talking about! Interestingly, both the fitters I mentioned earlier have commented that I am spot on about fit, and as one of them said, fitting a saddle to a horse is not rocket science, the difficult part is doing the alterations and making sure it fits the rider too. I agree, we shouldn't have to do this - but it seems it is the only way!

Which saddler was that? :) might be one of the ones i've used

Highly unlikely - it was in a completely different area from where I am now. Don't think I want to open myself up to accusations of defamation by naming them really....sorry!

I lost a LOT of money on that experience...!
