Hadn't jumped in many, many years as Fleur had got into the habit of refusing at fences first time then bombing over them second time, I didn't have an instructor and didn't know what I was doing wrong. Last week I asked my teacher if she thought Fleur was too old to do a bit of light jumping, considering she used to love it, and teacher said that we'd give it a go this week. Did a lot of pole work first, then a small crosspole that Fleur had a look at then stepped over with some encouragement from me, then we went from there.

Have a HUGE grin on my face and have made OH very jealous as he has only ridden once or twice and really likes the look of this jumping malarkey!

EXCELLENT!!

I also recently went jumping on my mare for the first time in years and years! I went with some friends and their horses.

The jumps were only 1 ft off the ground but she decided to take off at 1 meter! It took me by surprise which made me scream “woooooooooooooooooooooowaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” as I went over.

Subsequently (and unintentionally) I scared all the other horses who then proceeded to bolt down the field. Ooooops!

Needless to say, her and I tend to isolate ourselves allot.

Thank you everyone for the lovely replies! I think she enjoyed it - it certainly felt like she was remembering our competition days of old and was probably wondering why the jumps were so tiny :) It will be really great to do something that we both love for her final few years with me.

@Berkeley - your mare sounds fantastic - who needs other people/horses anyway when you've got such a great team ;)
