OK not sure anyone will recheck this post, but being brave - here are a few pics of what I am struggling with...
I don't think I am miles out of balance in general? Could still work on the heels down bum back elements, but in mid air I am I think about right:
I've made some new holes in my stirrup leathers so will hoik them up again but think my knee will then miss the blocks so have also booked saddler to come and look at some alternatives trying to convince my south african born and bred OH that because its called an impala or springbok that the ideal jump saddles are a necessity!!
You def need to change the saddle as its not doing you any favours, the stirrup bars seem to be in the wrong place.
Try an Equipe Synergy, that works wonders
Definatley have a look at a saddle that sits you in more comfortably for jumping,i have a ex racer with a incredible back end when jumping, shame her front end isnt as quick!
It's the Impala Pro that I jump Wal in, and I love it! If you can I would really look to change your saddle (PITA I know...) and as you say put your stirrups up a few holes.
You will never be able to say he doesn't use his backend over a fence!!
I also have a Roo who does this. I got myself a stubben MF spezial with the huge blocks front and back and it has really helped me stay better balanced. Don't worry it will get worse the bigger you go. I find if I jump a bit bigger he tones it down especially over paralells as they have to start opening the jump out reaching forward so they have less impulsion/power to convert to throwing the back end. Basically when he has to do some work rather than having fun with rattling me about!
Thanks cyber horse that's actually quite reassuring as I had worried I would never sit him over a bigger fence, I don't have huge ambitions but would like him to be competitive over say 1.10 or even RC open which I think is 1.15 or so.
That's interesting Saratoga - what dressage saddle do you use? Roo has a suzannah (IHW's old one as it happens) so am hopefully that might mean an impala or springbok might fit him.... Have call in with saddle doctors and hoping they can come out over next month or so.
Never thought of that diesel dog! I do everything with him in back boots, generally just equilibrium trizone brushing boots behind (he jumps in open fronted tendon boots in front, hacks in knee/brushing boots in front and I mostly use polo wraps in front for flatwork) but compete in fetlock boots behind. He's occasionally a little close behind so I would be wary of taking them off though - also he doesn't do it over smaller fences, not sure of that indicates anything about the boots? Never knew they were banned in age classes though how interesting!
I would say from looking at your pictures that you do a similar thing to me - anticipate the landing and shove yourself backwards. I find that it makes it feel much worse, whereas if I land in a more forward position with my lower leg still forward, the jump feels much less extravagant.
I don't have much in the way of blocks on my saddle, I found as the fences went up I felt trapped by big blocks!
Yep that's exactly what I do - you always look in perfect balance in your pictures though!! I think I need to train myself out of it by putting fingers through neck strap to keep myself more forward....
Haha, far from it and Mally is the most economical, least extravagant horse in the world, so I do have a slight advantage
I'm not sure what I do to land correctly (it doesn't happen too often!) but I find a grid of three fences with the first and last easy heights and the middle one big helps me to recover better, without trying to exit out the back door!
I usually do one stride, but I'm not sure it would make a huge difference to do it on two. The fences still come up quick enough!
I just found that I was always building the last fence in my grids up, so it didn't matter how I landed as long as I stayed on!
Our school is poxy small, not even quite 40m long, but hoping we might get our jumping paddock back soon (had to put mares on it as both summer fields flooded/mudslide!) so can build something more interesting out there
