My pony's jumping has been coming on really well lately!

His approach and style over fences has improved a lot, the only problem we are now having is that he tends to "die" after the jump (loose energy and slow down when he lands) and I was just wondering if there were any excercises I could do to help him stay more balanmced and continue cantering? He is fine over small jumps and manages to keep a rhythm but when the jump is a bit bigger he looses his rhythm. I have been doing lots of gridwork with him and he keeps his rhythm through a grid but not over a single jump.

He is only 7 so could it be down to inexperience and him loosing balance? He is definetly not being lazy as he is full of energy and loves jumping. What do you suggest?

Put a jump at E and B and canter round over both. If he dies in between get after him.

Also try and grid and put a jump at an angle afterwards (say 3 non jumping strides). To start getting him to look for the next fence.

Make sure you always ride away from the fence. Even if it's a grid, canter a 20m circle afterwards for example.

make sure you are keeping a good contact on landing, keep your leg on, sit up and look up. ALWAYS look up and ride forward.

if he is ok through a grid it sounds like he thinks he is finished when there nowt else to go over.

try not to just do one fence, always do a dog leg or another fence somewhere else. after all you never find one fence in th ring!

you could also do walk, canter, walk transtions, in fact any transition is good to get them comming off your leg. never do more than 5 strides before asking for something different. dont canter round the school for several laps, it wont teach your pony anything.

if he does grids fine then i wouldnt worry to much, it just a typical pony thing! no fence no movement!

good luck
