so.. my 16.2hh ish has a very high head carriage going into jumps.. we have tried allsorts with lots of different instructors but its her way, she does however do ok at schooling etc and our first ever dressage test she scored 64% and has gone on improving etc.... but jumping she just likes to have head up coming into jump so I have accustomed myself to cope.... now im starting my youngster jumping and she is the opposite... very good bascule she is five next month and has just hacked with the odd schooling session here and there..did her walk trot test and couple pleasure rides but she seems a natural at jumping, she feels like shes floating, she doesn't really have to make much effort, but her head is low when jumping compared to my mare and im finding it so difficult to make the change. I don't have a prob giving with my hands with her but I just feel like she has disappeared.

I should say youngster is very short coupled and short neck...whereas my mare is long.

How do you adjust yourself jumping different horses with different ways of going sorry for the essay but noticed lots of comments lately about not giving enough info in post !!

If your jumping position is good and your seat is secure you should be able to hop on any horse and jump it. You sound like you are doing okay anyway. The only thing I can suggest is few jumping lessons with a good instructor, and perhaps try and jump as many different horses as possible. You possibly need more confidence in your own abilities! Good luck.

I work on a yards with jumpers on, all very different in their going, then I also have my little cob who is completely different. It was hard to start with going from gypsy to the bigger ones but with tuition and lots of jumping you soon get used to it :)

I'm a little different, my friend and I were actually chatting about this the other day... Ican get on a completely alien horse and jump/compete it... But put me on a slightly quirky horse of my own and I fudge it! I. Make too many excuses for it whereas if its not my horse I get on and 'ride it like I stole it'! I think though, with time, riding two complete opposites and you will just adjust, just don't try and force it.

What types have you jumped besides your own? At the moment you're used to one way and so it's kind of like starting over. And while yes we should all be accomplished equestrians that can jump anything, most of us are mere mortals. I'm jumping a couple of ponies for a client at the moment and it's great. Then I get on my 16.2 hand long neck long back mare and I'm a bit lost til I sort myself. Actually my mare sounds like yours, head up. I do find this much easier. I also have a 3yo who hasn't started US obviously but she sounds much like your youngster. Short coupled handy type. Will be different than Abba I'm sure.

Anyway how about some simple gymnastic work to help you get used to her style a little. I'm sure that soon enough the 2 different styles will become automatic for you.

I know how you feel! Before Ned came, I used to jump at least 5 different horses and cope fine. When Ned was lame at the beginning of the year, I jumped a very steady 14.3 and it threw me!

I've had two where I had to sit before the fence on one and get my weight off the back of the other. More recently I've had one head-up and one head-down. The only way I cope is to get on the horse, warm up, and before I jump anything, stop and rehearse the way I need to ride this horse. Kind of like loading a routine into my brain. I hope that helps.
